HAMBURGER ON TOAST

This was a quick Saturday lunch or dinner while I was growing up. Sounds a little weird but is actually very good. You can liven it up a little with some chopped onion and a good dijon or spicy mustard, but this was the way my mom always made it for us kids and the way I make it for mine!

1 lb lean ground beef (I use ground round)
salt
pepper
yellow mustard
6 -8 slices white bread, toasted

Steps:

  • Lay toast slices on baking sheet.
  • Spread slices lightly with mustard.
  • Pat ground beef into a patty form and light press onto toast slices.
  • Sprinkle with salt and pepper.
  • Broil about 5-10 minutes or until hamburger is cooked through.

This is a fun sandwich that I came up with on a whim yesterday. The condiments are not mayo, not mustard, not ketchup... just hummus. I served it open-faced on a piece of toasted cracked wheat bread, slathered with hummus, some lettuce, and sliced tomatoes. Not sure what I expected, but it was really yummy. Everyone gave it two thumbs up. So, you ready... Let's get into the kitchen.

PLAN/PURCHASE
1/4 pound(s) ground chuck
3 - 4 medium pitted black olives, chopped
1 - 2 tablespoon(s) pickle relish, dill or sweet, your choice
2 - 3 tablespoon(s) freshly made hummus
1 small tomato, sliced
1 slice(s) bread, toasted
some fresh lettuce
salt, kosher variety, to taste
black pepper, freshly ground, to taste

Steps:

  • PREP/PREPARE
  • You will need a small skillet to make this recipe.

  • Gather your ingredients (mise en place).
  • Add the olives and relish to the ground beef and gently mix to combine. Then place in a cold skillet, put it on the stovetop, set the heat to medium, and sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper.
  • After the bottom begins to brown (3 - 4 minutes), flip, sprinkle with a bit of salt and pepper, and cook an additional 3 - 4 minutes. Note: I like mine a bit on the rare side, so I cut those times in half.
  • PLATE/PRESENT
  • Toast the bread, and slather with 2 tablespoons of the hummus. Then toss the tomatoes with the remaining hummus. Note: You might need a bit more hummus, but that is okay because hummus is a good thing. Place the lettuce on the toast, add the burger, and top with the hummus-tossed tomatoes. Enjoy.
  • Keep the faith, and keep cooking.
