SALT DOUGH RECIPE FOR ORNAMENTS, HANDPRINTS, AND CRAFTING
Salt dough is a fun craft to do with the kids! Mix up a batch of our salt dough recipe for making Christmas ornaments, keepsake handprints, or other salt dough crafts. PLEASE NOTE: A number of readers have had issues with their ornaments puffing and losing their shape. We haven't been able to replicate this in our own kitchens yet, but if you're concerned, we recommend lowering the oven temperature to 200°F and leaving them in for longer.

Steps:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Slowly stream in the water while stirring until it comes together. Finish mixing together with hands. Knead until dough is soft, about five minutes.
- Preheat oven to 300°F. Place half of the dough between two large pieces of parchment paper. Roll out until 1/8" thick. Remove the top sheet of parchment.
- Using cookie cutters, cut shapes (leaving them on the parchment). Peel away the excess dough. Transfer the parchment with shapes to a baking sheet.
- Using a straw or toothpick, poke a hole for ribbon or an ornament hanger. Bake in preheated oven for 1 hour, or until hard.
- Once cooled, decorate using glitter and paint. To make sure the ornaments last a long time (I have one from 30 years ago!), spray with a light coat of polyurethane spray. Thread on a ribbon and hang on tree.

Steps:
- Combine ingredients and knead dough for 15 to 20 minutes.
- Roll dough out and cut around hand or cut circles out for making hand imprints. Use cookie cutters for ornaments or gift tags. If necessary, slightly dampen pieces to make them stick together.
- Make a small hole for the hanger and prick to prevent air bubbles.
- Bake at 300ºF about 20 to 25 minutes or until golden. You may have to bake considerably longer depending on how thick your items are. They may not feel hard right away but will harden as they cool.
- Paint and decorate as desired. Acrylic paints work best and use a varnish to make them shiny.

- Mix water in a little at a time.
- Knead dough 7-10 minutes.
- Roll out dough and cut into shapes.
- Allow to air dry or bake at 325 on a foiled cookie sheet.
- For each 1/4 inch of thickness, cook for 1/2 hour.
- Allow to cool and decorate as desired.
- Store dough in plastic bag.

- Combine all of your ingredients and knead for 10 minutes. If your dough is too dry add a little bit more water in and continue to knead.
- Roll out the dough to a thickness that you'd like your salt dough ornament to be. We like between 1/4 to 1/2 inch thickness.

- Mix the ingredients together in a large bowl using a wooden spoon. When it becomes too stiff to stir, use clean hands to bring the dough together.
- NOTE: If the dough is too wet and sticky, knead in a little more flour, about 1 tablespoon at a time. If it’s too stiff, add a little more water, about 1 tablespoon at a time. There is a big range in the way different flours absorb liquid, so there is a normal range of variation here. It should be easy to work with—soft and not too stiff and not excessively sticky.
