OUTLET STOPPED WORKING BREAKER NOT TRIPPED: 10 CAUSES+FIX

From fixitwired.com
  • Dead outlets. Outlets do not last forever. Just like other electrical objects, outlets have an expiry date. Over years of usage, an outlet wears out and expires.
  • Burnt-out outlets. When your outlets do not work, try touching and feeling the outlet. If you ever feel the outlet to be warm, smell burns, or see sparks inside the receptacle, after which the outlet has stopped working, the reason is the burnt-out outlet.
  • Half-hot outlets. A half-hot outlet is a duplex outlet. One plug is permanently on in this outlet, whereas the other can be turned on and off with a switch.
  • Damaged wires. When the outlet is not working, and the breaker is still fine, consider checking the wires of the malfunctioned outlet. When the wires get too old or damaged, it will interfere with the current transfer from the breaker to your outlet, and thus, it will not work at all.
  • Poor wiring. When you install the outlets yourself, there are chances of mistakes and poor wiring. Professionals can also make mistakes, but the chances of mistakes are higher for a layperson.

9 REASONS WHY OUTLETS NOT WORKING BREAKER NOT TRIPPED

  • Damaged Wires. If the breaker hasn’t tripped but the outlets in your home have refused to work, you have to turn your attention to the wiring. If the wiring in the outlet is old or damaged, it may impede the transmission of electricity.
  • Loose Connections. Loose connections will also impede the transmission of electricity. You can identify loose connections in an outlet by tugging on the wires at the connectors.
  • Tripped GFCI. Many people own GFCIs but they don’t know how the devices work. A GFCI is triggered by a ground fault. When a current strays from its intended path, the GFCI responds by interrupting the circuit, cutting the power to the outlet.
  • Dead Outlet. Outlets do not last forever. Outlets have an expiration date, just like every other electronic component. Using an outlet causes it to wear out.
  • Burnt Out Outlets. Outlets can burn out. If your outlet has ever felt warm or if you’ve ever seen small fires and sparks inside the receptacle, and then the outlet stopped working, it burnt out.
