SIMPLE SPAGHETTI WITH TOMATO SAUCE

Simple Spaghetti with Tomato Sauce image

This basic pasta dish can be transformed by adding extras like cooked bacon, shrimp or even a few handfuls of baby spinach to the sauce. We like canned San Marzano plum tomatoes because they are slightly sweeter and less acidic than other varieties.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Time 40m

Yield 4 cups sauce

Number Of Ingredients 9

3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
4 cloves garlic, very thinly sliced
Kosher salt
Pinch crushed red pepper flakes
One 28-ounce can San Marzano plum tomatoes, crushed by hand
1 cup torn basil leaves
12 ounces spaghetti
Grated Parmesan, optional
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.

Steps:

  • Cook the oil, garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper flakes in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring, until the oil heats up and the garlic just starts to turn golden, 4 to 6 minutes.
  • Add the tomatoes; rinse the can with about 1 cup of water, and add the water to the skillet. Add the basil, raise the heat to medium-high and simmer until the sauce thickens, 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, add the spaghetti to the boiling water, and cook according to package directions; strain well.
  • Add the cooked spaghetti to the sauce, and stir to coat. Serve with Parmesan if desired.

SPAGHETTI DINNER WITH HOMEMADE SAUCE

Spaghetti dinner with homemade sauce image

A healthier spaghetti dinner with ground turkey, whole wheat noodles and a simple, and simply divine, homemade sauce.

Provided by Kathryn Doherty

Categories     Main dishes

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 pound whole wheat spaghetti
1 pound ground turkey (see notes)
2-3 cups of spaghetti sauce*
Optional toppings: grated Parmesan cheese, chopped fresh parsley or basil

Steps:

  • Bring your water to a boil, salt it very generously and add your spaghetti noodles. Check your package for cooking time (usually about 7-9 minutes). Cook until al dente, which means its tender but still has a little bit of a bite to it, and drain.
  • Meanwhile, brown your ground turkey in a large pan over medium heat. I don't use olive oil - find I don't even need it.
  • Once the turkey is cooked through, add enough spaghetti sauce to your liking and stir well to combine and heat through. We like our spaghetti extra saucy and use 3 cups. Probably because the homemade sauce is so, so good!
  • Serve the turkey and sauce over the spaghetti noodles. Pile it high on your plate, then pile it a little higher and sprinkle with desired toppings. Dive in!

SPAGHETTI SAUCE

Spaghetti Sauce image

Provided by Ree Drummond : Food Network

Time 2h15m

Yield 12 servings

Number Of Ingredients 20

5 pounds ground beef (I used ground round)
3 tablespoons olive oil
2 large yellow onions, diced
6 cloves garlic, minced
Two 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes
One 14-ounce can crushed tomatoes
One 6-ounce can tomato paste
1 jar good store-bought marinara sauce (you can use another jar if you like the sauce to be more saucy than meaty)
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons kosher salt
1 teaspoon ground oregano
1 teaspoon ground thyme
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper, optional
4 bay leaves
1/4 cup finely minced fresh parsley or 3 tablespoons parsley flakes, plus more for serving
8 fresh basil leaves, chopped
1 whole rind from 1 wedge Parmesan, optional
1/2 cup grated Parmesan, optional, plus more for serving
2 pounds spaghetti, cooked al dente and tossed with olive oil, for serving
Garlic-cheese bread, for serving

Steps:

  • In a large pot over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef until totally browned. Remove the meat from the pot with a slotted spoon and put into a bowl. Set aside.
  • Discard any grease in the pot, but do not clean the pot. Drizzle in the olive oil. When it is heated, throw in the diced onions. Stir it around for 1 1/2 minutes, and then add the garlic. Stir and cook for an additional minute.
  • Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste and marinara sauce. Stir to combine, and then add the sugar, salt, oregano, thyme, crushed red pepper (if using) and bay leaves. Stir, then add the cooked ground beef and stir to combine. Place the lid on the pot and allow to simmer for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Add a little water or some low-sodium broth if it needs more liquid.
  • After an hour, add the minced parsley, basil and the Parmesan rind if using (or grated Parmesan if you prefer--or both!). Stir to combine, and then put the lid back on and allow it to simmer for another 30 minutes or so. Discard the bay leaves before serving.
  • Serve a big bowl of oiled noodles and the spaghetti sauce so guests can serve themselves. Top each serving with minced parsley and grated Parmesan (or Parmesan shavings) and serve with a big piece of garlic-cheese bread.
  • Amen.

HOMEMADE ITALIAN SPAGHETTI SAUCE RECIPE

Homemade Italian Spaghetti Sauce Recipe image

Here is my family spaghetti sauce recipe passed down from my grandmother in Italy - it is the best one you will ever cook - don't trust me - try it!

Provided by Lauren Cobello

Time 3h20m

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 TSBP olive oil
1/2 onion (finely chopped)
4 cloves of garlic (minced)
3 28 oz. cans of Crushed Tomatoes
1 Tbsp Salt
4 Tbsp Basil
1 tsp Black pepper
1 Tbsp Sugar (optional)
1/3 cup Grated Parmesan or Romano Cheese

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a 5+ qt. pot over medium heat, and add the onion.
  • Saute for 10 minutes or so, stirring often and being careful not to burn it.
  • Add the chopped or pressed garlic.
  • Heat for another one to two minutes, making sure not to burn the garlic, then add all the tomatoes, salt, black pepper, basil, and sugar. Stirring often, bring to a low boil.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-3 hours stirring often.
  • For the first half of the simmer time, do so with the pot uncovered, then cover.
  • Add the cheese, stir in and simmer for an additional 5 minutes or so.
  • This will make the equivalent of 4-5 jars of sauce, and the cost is probably about half (and it tastes way better).
