MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

Monte Cristo Sandwich image

A great brunch item! One of my husbands favorite filling, baked, french toast style, sandwiches filled with cheese, ham, turkey & mustard. Raspberry preserves is a must for him. Could be eaten for breakfast, lunch or dinner. This is a LESSER FAT Monte Cristo recipe being baked and not fried full of flavor! I also like to buy the low salt cold cuts or use fresh baked turkey leftovers sliced thin.

Time 35m

Yield 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 13

8 slices bread (I use challah)
4 teaspoons honey dijon mustard
8 slices thin deli sliced swiss cheese
8 slices thin deli ham
8 slices thin deli sliced turkey (I like smoked)

  • Place on baking sheet; drizzle any remaining egg mixture over top of sandwiches.
  • Bake 8-10 minutes until bottom is golden brown.
  • Turn with wide spatula and continue baking 8-10 minutes or until second side is golden brown.
  • Serve warm dusted with powdered sugar and dip or spread raspberry preserves on sandwiches.

Categories     main-dish

Time 43m

Yield 1 sandwich

Number Of Ingredients 11

3 slices white bread
Mayonnaise, as needed
2 slices Gouda
2 slices turkey
3 large eggs, beaten
1/4 cup milk
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
Strawberry slices, for garnish
Orange wedges, for garnish
Serving suggestion: Blackberry jam

Steps:

  • On a work surface, lay out 2 slices of bread and spread with mayonnaise. Top each slice with the 1 slice of Gouda and 1 slice of turkey each. Put the third slice of bread on top of one stack, and flip the remaining stack on top, cheese-side down, to make a triple-decker sandwich.
  • Using a knife, cut the crusts off the sandwich (this helps to pinch and seal the ends). Wrap the sandwich tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes and up to 6 hours. (Wrapping the sandwich in plastic wrap, compacts it, and prevents the egg batter from seeping in.)
  • Combine the eggs and milk in a bowl. Heat the oil and butter in a skillet over medium-high heat. Unwrap the sandwich and dip it in the egg batter, to coat evenly. Gently place it in the skillet, and fry, turning once, until golden brown and hot, about 5 minutes total.
  • Cut the Monte Cristo in 1/2, transfer it to a place, and garnish with the strawberry and orange. Spoon some jam over each 1/2 and serve immediately.

MONTE CRISTO OMELET SANDWICH

Monte Cristo Omelet Sandwich image

If you are a fan of Monte Cristos, you'll love this riff on the popular Indian street food egg sandwich. It's every bit as crisp on the outside, ooey-gooey on the inside and dusted all over with confectioners' sugar. A square-shaped bread is ideal: It enables neater folding of the omelet. You will also want to use a nonstick skillet that is at least ten inches in diameter -- the omelet won't fit in a smaller pan.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 15m

Yield 1 sandwich

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 large eggs
Kosher salt
2 slices Swiss cheese
1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard
1/2 tablespoon confectioners' sugar
1 tablespoon unsalted butter
2 slices sourdough or white bread
2 large slices ham

Steps:

  • Add the eggs, 1 tablespoon water and 1/4 teaspoon salt to a small bowl and whisk to combine. Spread each cheese slice with 1/4 teaspoon of the Dijon and set the slices mustard-side-up on a flat surface. Put the confectioners' sugar in a small fine-mesh sieve set over a plate.
  • Heat the butter in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until melted and starting to brown around the edges of the pan. Add the egg mixture and swirl the pan to coat the bottom. Working quickly, dip 1 slice of the bread in the eggs, then flip the slice and place it so the top edge of the slice is near the edge of the pan furthest from you. Repeat with the remaining slice of bread, setting it across the pan from the first bread slice. The bottom edges of the two slices should be in a straight line, with eggs all around.
  • Continue to cook the eggs until they are completely set on the bottom and mostly cooked on the top, 1 to 2 minutes more. Slide a large nonstick spatula under the bread and flip the whole omelet in one single motion. Set the cheese mustard-side up on top of the omelet, covering the bread. Lay the ham on top of one of the slices of cheese. Using the spatula, fold one side of the omelet (but not the bread side) over the cheese and ham, then fold over the other side. Fold in half so the bread slices meet and form a sandwich.
  • Cook until the bread on the bottom is golden brown and the cheese is beginning to melt, 1 to 2 minutes. Reduce the heat if the bread begins to darken too quickly before the cheese melts. Flip and cook until the other side is golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes.
  • Set the sandwich on a plate and dust with the confectioners' sugar.

BEST MONTE CRISTO SANDWICH

Best Monte Cristo Sandwich image

This is my one of my son's most requested recipes, though all my kids love it! We serve it with warmed, real maple syrup for dipping. We tried 4 or 5 recipes before combining a few to come up with this one, now nothing else will do!

Provided by Darcys Diner

Categories     Lunch/Snacks

Time 30m

Yield 4 sandwiches, 4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 16

8 slices firm bread (we use pepperidge farm)
8 slices deli ham
8 slices deli turkey
4 slices American cheese (or you can use cheddar, my kids prefer american)
4 slices swiss cheese
1 egg, beaten
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sugar
2/3 cup flour
1 3/4 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons honey dijon mustard
powdered sugar, garnish
maple syrup or jam, for dipping
oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Assemble four sandwiches using bread, meats, and cheeses. Set aside. In medium mixing bowl (I use a square casserole dish), combine egg, water, milk, salt, sugar, flour, baking powder & mustard. Beat well. Heat about 1" of oil in deep skillet (I use a large iron skillet). Dip your sandwiches into the coating mixture, I like to get them well soaked. They will be drippy -- try to drain off a bit, carefully slide into the hot oil. Repeat with remaining sandwiches. When nicely browned, gently flip over & brown other side. Remove to paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Let cool a few minutes before cutting so the cheese doesn't ooze out. Cut each sandwich into four fingers for easy dipping. Serve with syrup or jam.

Steps:

  • For the egg batter, mix the egg, milk and vanilla.
  • Make a sandwich by putting mayonnaise, mustard, cheese, ham, bacon and cheese in between two slices of wheat bread. Soak the outer part of the sandwich into the egg batter. Make sure that the batter is absorbed by the bread.
  • Heat up the pan in medium heat and melt the butter. Put only enough butter that would grease the pan. Make sure not to put too much.
  • Brown both sides of the sandwich.
  • For serving, you can cut the sandwich diagonally. Apply the jam and sprinkle the icing sugar.

  • Hash Browns. Hash browns are a popular choice for serving Monte Cristo sandwiches. They work well because the flavors of the sandwich do not overpower them, and they provide additional carbohydrates so that the meal feels more filling.
  • Summer Fruit Salad. A fruit salad is another popular choice for serving with Monte Cristo sandwiches. This works well because it provides a refreshing contrast to the salty sandwich while keeping carbohydrates low to avoid feeling lethargic after the meal.
  • French Fries. Like hash browns, French fries go well with Monte Cristo sandwiches because of how easily they complement the sandwich without overpowering it.
  • Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup. This combination works because the taste of the soup does not overpower the sandwich and provides a hearty meal that feels more filling than just eating a plain sandwich by itself.
  • Red Cabbage Coleslaw. Coleslaw can be mixed with mayonnaise and other additional ingredients to give it a tangy taste that complements the saltiness of Monte Cristo sandwiches.
  • Mediterranean Chicken Salad. This salad works well with Monte Cristo sandwiches because it provides a meaty dish that isn’t too salty and provides additional carbohydrates without taking away from the flavor.
  • Pickled Vegetables. Pickled vegetables are an excellent choice for serving Monte Cristo sandwiches because the tart flavor helps to reduce some of the saltiness.
  • Sauteed Spinach. Sauteed spinach is a good option because it provides much-needed nutrients without adding too many additional carbohydrates. It also goes particularly well with eggs and can be strategically pre-portioned to complement the Monte Cristo sandwich.
