Monte Cristo Sandwich - the Real One image

This is the real Monte Cristo sandwich. It has a nice thick batter and is absolutely delicious. Enjoy hot sandwich with currant jelly or make a currant sauce with currant jelly, water and heavy cream.

1 quart oil for frying, or as needed
⅔ cup water
1 egg
⅔ cup all-purpose flour
1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
8 slices white bread
4 slices Swiss cheese
4 slices turkey
4 slices ham
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar for dusting

Steps:

  • Heat 5 inches of oil in a deep-fryer to 365 degrees F (180 degrees C). While oil is heating, make the batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and water. Combine the flour, baking powder, salt and pepper; whisk into the egg mixture until smooth. Set aside in the refrigerator.
  • Assemble sandwiches by placing one slice of turkey on one slice of bread, a slice of ham on another, then sandwich them with the Swiss cheese in the middle. Cut sandwiches into quarters, and secure with toothpicks.
  • Dip each sandwich quarter in the batter so that all sides are coated. Deep fry in the hot oil until golden brown on all sides. Remove toothpicks and arrange on a serving tray. Dust with confectioners' sugar just before serving.

1/4 cup mayonnaise
2 teaspoons Thousand Island salad dressing
1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
8 slices white bread
1/4 pound thinly sliced deli turkey
1/4 pound thinly sliced deli ham
4 slices Swiss cheese
2 large eggs, beaten
1 cup half-and-half cream
1/4 teaspoon ground mustard
2 tablespoons butter
1/4 cup strawberry preserves

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, salad dressing and Dijon mustard; spread over 1 side of each slice of bread. On 4 slices, layer the turkey, ham and Swiss cheese; top with remaining bread. In a shallow bowl, combine the eggs, cream and ground mustard. Dip sandwiches in egg mixture., On a griddle or large skillet, melt butter. Toast sandwiches over medium heat until bread is golden brown, 2-3 minutes on each side. Serve with preserves.

2 tablespoons garlic butter
3 slices Texas toast or other thick-sliced bread
1 (1-ounce) slice Swiss cheese
3 ounces thinly sliced ham
1 (1-ounce) slice Cheddar
3 ounces thinly sliced cooked chicken or turkey
3 eggs
1/4 cup water
1 1/2 cups panko bread crumbs
Oil, for deep-frying
Powdered sugar
3 ounces raspberry sauce (made by mixing together 1/3 cup raspberry preserves with 2 tablespoons cranberry juice)

Steps:

  • Spread garlic butter on 1 side of each bread slice. Place cheese on 1 piece of bread, place ham on top of cheese. Cover with another slice of bread, followed by the slice of Cheddar and the chicken breast. Place the third piece of bead on top, making sure the meats and cheese are completely tucked inside of the bread. Place on a cutting board. Slice sandwich diagonally and hold together with long wooden picks. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  • Preheat deep-fryer to 350 degrees F.
  • Beat eggs and water in a medium shallow bowl. Place the panko bread crumbs in another shallow bowl.
  • Remove the sandwich from the refrigerator. Dip into egg wash, let drain, and then coat the sandwich completely in the panko bread crumbs. Fry in hot oil until golden brown (about 45 seconds). Remove from oil, drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve immediately with raspberry sauce.

1/4 cup red currant jelly
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon orange juice
1 tablespoon water
2/3 cup Egg Beaters egg substitute, egg substitute
1/2 cup nonfat milk
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
4 slices cooked turkey breast, 1 oz each
4 slices cooked ham, 1 oz each
4 slices 50% -less-fat jarlsberg cheese, 1 oz each
8 slices white bread
cooking spray
1 1/2 teaspoons powdered sugar

Steps:

  • To prepare sauce, combine first 4 ingredients in a small saucepan over low heat, stirring well with a whisk. Cook until jelly melts.
  • To prepare sandwiches, combine egg substitute, milk, salt, and pepper in a shallow dish.
  • Place one slice each of the turkey, ham, and cheese on each of 4 bread slices. Top with remaining bread slices. Dip both sides of each sandwich into the egg substitute mixture. Place sandwiches in a large nonstick skillet coated with cooking spray over medium-high heat. Reduce heat to medium; cook for 3 minutes on each side or until sandwiches are golden. Sandwiches can also be cooked in a pannini press.
  • Sprinkle sandwiches with powdered sugar. Serve sandwiches with sauce.
