- THE CONTESTANTS ARE SENT TO COOKING SCHOOL. The teams are reportedly sent to Simon Johnson Cooking School in Sydney. Some rifle through recipe books the night before, but the general consensus when applying is that the contestants’ personalities are more important than their cooking skills.
- THEY DON’T COOK AT THEIR OWN HOMES. With some of the contestants’ homes not a suitable size to fit a truckload of cameras and crew for the instant restaurants, some teams are forced to hire or borrow homes that meet the producers’ strict criteria.
- TWO ENDINGS FILMED ... ONLY ONE IS REAL. With the winning team a hotly kept secret, even the contestants don’t know who has won until the same time as the audience.
- THE FINAL DISHES ARE ALSO COOKED BY CHEFS. The magazine reports a group of chefs cooks copies of the finalists’ dishes so there is plenty to go around for a taste test.
- THE CONTESTANTS CAN’T DRESS THEMSELVES. Well, who doesn’t want a wardrobe supplied just for them? Melbourne gatecrasher Danielle reportedly said she was less than thrilled by the style chosen for her by the show’s wardrobe department.
- DRAMA IS THE MAIN PRIORITY. Well, there are no surprises that the judges are told to heat up the drama. So when you are looking at a plate that looks like a dog’s dinner and the judges are praising it, it could be because producers want to give the impression there is a tight battle right up until the end.
- CONTESTANTS ARE FORCED TO FAKE FEUDS. Reports say the TV war between arch rivals Chloes and Kelly and Melbourne twins Vikki and Helena is all drummed up for ratings.
- TEAMS ARE GIVEN FED STORYLINES. The reality show, like any drama on the tube, has a script which the contestants must follow. Producers devise a script and they prompt contestants on what to say and how to react.
- TEAMS DON’T PICK THE FOOD. It is understood contestants find out their theme and menu the night before they film. Producers are said to pluck meals from different theme ideas and menus submitted by the teams during the audition stages.
- THEY’RE WON OVER WITH CHAMPAGNE. After a team is eliminated the contestants are reportedly invited for a briefing with a leading producer who butters them up over champagne.
