I love this! You can use sweet potatoes, but I prefer yams. No sugar or marshmallows in this. The sweetness comes from a banana. Great with ham or for Thanksgiving or anytime!

MASHED CANDIED YAMS
Although I will always fondly remember my moms yams without marshmallows, I really wanted to try the candied version. After much trial and error, and mashing up a few of my favorite recipes, I created these. I've been told by friends and family that don't even like yams that I must make these every thanksgiving.

MASHED CANDIED YAMS
I had these at an appreciation dinner at Treasure Island Casino in Minnesota and later asked the banquet manager to give me the recipe. These were delicious and very easy to make. They taste like candy and melt in your mouth . If you like you can thicken them up with instant mashed potatos, this gives them a bit smoother texture and enables you to use a pastry gun to plate the yams for a fancier presentaion.

GARLIC COCONUT MASHED YAMS (SWEET POTATOES)
This flavorful vegan side dish is ever-so-slightly adapted from a recipe in The Millennium Cookbook. These yams are truly addictive. They are a beautiful bed for a filet of fish, and a perfect complement to Caribbean-inspired dishes such as jerked meat or tempeh. I've even been known to eat the leftovers cold, straight from the refrigerator! This is a savory sweet potato dish, rather than the traditional sweet ones - It emphasizes the flavors of garlic and thyme.

- While the garlic and peppers are roasting, place the chunks of yam in a large saucepan and boiled until tender, this should take 10-15 minutes.
- Drain the excess water from the yam and use a potato masher to mash until smooth. As you begin to breakdown the yam use the coconut milk to aid this process.

- Place the cubed sweet potatoes in a large saucepan or Dutch oven and add enough water to cover by about 1″. Add 1 teaspoon of the salt and bring the mixture to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce the heat and simmer, uncovered, until the potatoes are tender (in other words, it’s easy to slide a fork in and out), about 9 to 12 minutes.
- Drain well, then return the potatoes to the pot. Mash the sweet potatoes to your desired consistency.
- Promptly add almost all of the green onion and parsley, reserving a small amount of each for garnish. Add the garlic, and stir to combine. Then stir in most of the sour cream (reserve roughly 1 tablespoon for garnish), all of the butter, and the remaining 1 teaspoon salt. Season to taste with additional salt (I usually add another 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon) and freshly ground black pepper.
- Transfer the mashed potatoes to a serving bowl and swirl the reserved sour cream onto the top with a spoon. Sprinkle with the reserved green onion and parsley, drizzle the top lightly with olive oil, and finish with a sprinkle of pepper.

- Baked Candied Yams. Baked candied yams are probably one of the most well-known and well-loved yam recipes. And if you want to make sure that your candied yams are sweet, tender, and perfectly glazed, this is the recipe you’ll need.
- Yam Cake. First off, if you’re picturing a large, bakery-style cake, let me stop you right there. Yam cake isn’t that kind of cake. It’s savory, hearty, and packed with umami flavor.
- Golden Yam Cake. Unlike the above-mentioned yam cake, golden yam cake is sweet. It’s light, fluffy, incredibly moist, and despite its simplicity, one of the most amazing cakes you’ll ever taste.
- Baked Yams. This recipe for baked yams is paleo- and vegan-friendly, gluten-free, and Whole30-compliant, so it should work for just about anyone, no matter their dietary needs.
- Ube Milkshake. Looking for a vegan-friendly, lactose-free milkshake option to help minimize your dessert cravings? Try this three-ingredient ube milkshake!
- Mashed Yams. Mashed yams are similar to mashed potatoes, only they’re sweet, spicy, and a gorgeous orange color. All you’ll need to make them is cinnamon, sea salt, water, butter, pepper, milk, and yams, of course.
- Mashed Ube. Sweet, mashed ube tastes almost exactly the same as mashed yams. The main difference is that this easy-to-make side dish is purple and even a bit sweeter.
- Sweet Potato Fries. These six-ingredient sweet potato fries are a tasty, healthier alternative to traditional French fries. They’re crispy on the outside but soft and tender on the inside.
- Sweet Potato Muffins. These dense, crumbly muffins are sweet, cinnamon-flavored, and surprisingly healthy, even if you decide to add the optional chocolate chips and chopped pecans.
- Jamaican Yellow Yam Stew. If you want to take a deep dive into seriously scrumptious yam recipes, check out Jamaican recipes. Jamaican chefs can do amazing things with yams.
MASHED PURPLE YAMS WITH SESAME BROWN BUTTER

- Place the yams on the prepared baking sheet – do not pierce their skins! – and bake them for 30-45 minutes, or until they can easily be pierced with a knife. (They can vary in size quite a bit and the larger ones will take longer to cook.) Remove them from the oven and, when they are cool enough to handle, cut them in half and scrape out the flesh. Discard the skins.
- While the yams are roasting, make the brown butter. Put the butter in a small frying pan over medium-high heat. The butter will first melt, then become very frothy and finally it will start to brown. Once the froth begins to die down a little keep a close eye on it and start to stir the butter so you can see exactly what is going on. You want lots of dark brown bits in the butter. This should take about 5-7 minutes. Once the butter is very brown remove it from the heat and pour it into a small bowl to stop the cooking. Stir in the sesame oil.
- Mash the yams with a fork and add all but one teaspoon of the brown butter/sesame oil. Add the rice vinegar to the yams and stir till everything is well combined. Season to taste with sea salt.
