This is a very easy and simple recipe that you can make with ingredients (with the exception of the sweet potatoes) you most likely have in your pantry.

6 cups peeled and cubed sweet potatoes
½ cup butter, sliced
¼ cup water
2 tablespoons maple syrup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons heavy cream
1 teaspoon maple extract
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
¼ teaspoon salt
10 miniature marshmallows, or more to taste

Steps:

  • Spray the inside of a slow cooker with cooking spray.
  • Place cubed sweet potatoes in the slow cooker. Add butter and water.
  • Cook until sweet potatoes are soft when pricked with a fork, 4 hours on Low or 2 hours on High. Turn slow cooker off. Add maple syrup, brown sugar, heavy cream, maple extract, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt to the slow cooker and blend with an immersion blender. Garnish with mini marshmallows.

  • Place sweet potatoes in the slow cooker and add water to cover.
  • Cook on High until potatoes are tender, 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

5 pounds medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup sour cream
1 1/2 to 2 cups milk, warm
2 tablespoons sliced chives

Steps:

  • Toss the potatoes, butter, 1 tablespoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper together in a 6-quart slow cooker. Add 1 cup of water, then cover and cook on high until the potatoes are tender, about 4 hours. (The potatoes might have browned lightly in spots but that is okay.)
  • Remove the lid and add the sour cream and 1 1/2 cups warm milk to the potatoes. Use a potato masher to smash the potatoes until they are mostly smooth. If the potatoes need to be thinned out, stir in the remaining 1/2 cup warm milk. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper. Garnish with chives.

2 lbs red potatoes, halved (I leave the peel on, but feel free to remove if you prefer)
2 cups water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup heavy cream (or greek yogurt)
2 tablespoons butter
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons garlic powder (or 5 garlic cloves, roasted and diced)
salt, to taste
pepper, to taste

Steps:

  • In crock pot, add 2 cups of water and potatoes.
  • Cook on high for 1-2 hours or until potatoes are very soft to touch.
  • Water should be almost evaporated and potatoes will mash when gently touched. If you have a lot of water leftover, drain it off. If you have under 1/2 cup, go ahead and leave it. This will help keep your potatoes from over drying while waiting for dinner to be done- so you can make them ahead of time.
  • Add cream, butter, garlic and mash well using hand mixer or mashing utensil, right there in the crock pot.
  • Add salt and pepper to taste.
  • Keep potatoes on medium or low for up to 2 hours, or until ready to serve.

I love that I can make them ahead, instead of trying to mash potatoes, make gravy, and carve turkey or roast all at once! I can make a double batch early in the day, toss them into the crockpot, and by the time dinner is served, the potatoes are ready and waiting! I usually skip the Ranch dressing, since I don't think it would taste good with my gravy. Time doesn't include time to peel, cook, and mash potatoes (usually takes me around 30-40 minutes)

1/2 cup sour cream
1/4 cup butter, softened
1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes, crumbled

Steps:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, butter, and seasonings until smooth. Stir into mashed potatoes until well blended.

In the insert of a 5–7-quart slow cooker, add the sweet potatoes, coconut milk and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on high for 4–5 hours or on low for 6–8 hours, until the potatoes are fork tender. Drain the potatoes, reserving the coconut milk. Return the sweet potatoes and garlic to the slow cooker and mash until smooth.
