LOLLIES ON ICE
The easiest recipe possible with ice lollies to help your friends chill

Steps:
- For a really clever, time-saving cheat, just buy the best lollies you can, then it's all in the presentation - thick clear glass and ice looks great together
- Put the ice cubes in a large plastic bag, cover with a tea towel, and bash with a hammer until roughly crushed. Return to the freezer. Once ready to serve, pile the crushed ice into a deep, narrow glass bowl or ice bucket and push in the lollies, stick upwards.
STRAWBERRY ICE LOLLIES
Make the most of strawberry season with these homemade lollies. Made with yogurt and plenty of berries, they're quick and easy to prepare before freezing

Steps:
- Tip the strawberries into a blender, food processor or smoothie-maker and blitz to a purée. Add the yogurt and blitz again to combine. Taste for sweetness and add as much sugar or honey as needed - this will depend on the ripeness of the fruit as well as your personal taste.
- Divide the mixture evenly between the holes of a six-hole ice lolly mould - they should be filled to the brim. Insert the lolly sticks and freeze for 4 hrs or until solid. Will keep frozen for up to a month.

ICE LOLLIES: A DEFINITIVE RANKING FROM WORST TO BEST - SHORTLIST

- Magnum. Really, it’s the undisputed king of frozen, stick-based foodstuffs, isn’t it? Nobody’s going to argue with you if you say this. So keep saying it – there will be no repercussions.
- 99 Flake. You have to respect the OG. Big Grandaddy soft serve and his chocolate wand – simple, cheap, oh so effective. There’s not much out there like it, and there doesn’t need to be – it’s cornered the market and there’s no knocking it off its creamy pedestal.
- Calippo. Behold, the clear market leader in non-cream ice lollies here, and also the king of non-stick-based frozen treats. If we’re looking for an accurate description, it’s a push-pop, in that you squeeze it from the bottom out of a cardboard tube – it’s the toothpaste of ice lollies, basically.
- Galaxy Ice Cream. Galaxy ice creams often get overlooked, destined to live in the chocolately shadow of a certain other ice cream. This is not a good thing – more needs to be done to remind people of the heavenly range on offer from Galaxy.
- Maxibon. I really really like sandwiches, but most of the ones I have have cheese and meat in. I like a peanut butter and jam one, too. Also, crisp and/or chip ones are great.
- Twister. More questions. So many questions. Nobody knows what a Twister is made out of. Again, is it an ice cream or an ice lolly? What flavour is it? What ungodly ingredient makes the white swirl on the outside?
- Solero. Is this an ice cream or an ice lolly? Defo ice cream in the middle, but defo ice lolly on the outside, isn’t it. God knows, and also doesn’t care, because nor do I – all I know is that I want one.
- Rocket Lolly. “Big old pack of ten of these please, barkeep.” “That’ll be 2p or something equally ridiculous.” “Many thanks. P.S. I’m going to eat four in a row and then probably another two about five hours later.”
- Fruit Pastille Lolly. This is very similar to the rocket lolly, but SPOILER ALERT: it just enters the chart a tiny bit below, because of the price. It’s Big Ice Cream’s fault clearly – a brand name comes with a heftier price tag.
- Snickers Ice Cream. Snickers are not the best chocolate bar on the market – that’s a Star Bar, obviously – but of all the chocolate bars that have made the frozen leap to freezer-ville, and been transformed into ice creams, Snickers comes out on top.

THE BEST ICE LOLLIES: BEAT THE HEAT WITH THESE ICE-COLD …

Author Marc Chacksfield
- Twister £2 Buy now from Amazon. Wall's has the Twister in its kids' range, which is frankly a disservice to one of the best ice lollies of all time. Originally released as the Tangle Twister in the early '80s, the 'twist' of pineapple ice cream and lime flavoured fruit, with a strawberry core, is still fantastic today.
- Magnum. £3.75. Buy now from Amazon. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was Wall's convincing the world that a choc ice on a stick was the height of ice cream luxury.
- Feast. £2.50. Buy now from Tesco. An '80s classic which is still going strong, a Feast is made up of chocolate ice cream and biscuit bits but it's when you bite into it that it really comes into its own - its solid chocolate centre is hard to beat!
- Calippo £2 Buy now from Tesco. The perfect hangover cure, the Calippo is a serious slab of frozen goodness (well, 30% fruit juice) that, no matter how quickly you eat, will always end up with a small cold puddle of juice at the end.
- Mr Freeze Freeze Pops. £1.50. Buy now from Tesco. There is nothing better than a Mr Freeze Freeze Pop on a hot day. A tube of flavoured ice that inevitably melts and becomes a tube of cold, slightly viscous liquid.
- Cornetto £2 Buy now from Amazon. So good, Edgar Wright made an unofficial movie trilogy based on Cornetto flavours. Cornetto means 'Little Horn' and it's basically a sturdy ice cream, with a chocolate-filled wafer and some nuts on the top.
- Solero £2 Buy now from Amazon. A big debate rages with Solero: is it an ice cream or is it an ice lolly? For the sake of this list, it is an ice lolly but we don't mind what you call it, given how good it is.
- Fab £2 Buy now from Tesco. If any ice lolly deserved a place in the MOMA for its design, then it would be the Fab. It's a pop art masterpiece (which was created in the late '60s) comprising a 'hundreds and thousands' covered chocolate top, vanilla ice cream middle and strawberry ice lolly base.
- Mini Milk. £2.20. Buy now from Tesco. When you were a child, a box of Mini Milks were 66% disappointment. You wanted the chocolate one or nothing at all. Trying them now as a grown up and our more refined palate is happy to chow down on a vanilla Mini Milk or strawberry one.
- Fruit Pastilles £2 Buy now from Tesco. The perfect lolly for those who can't make their minds up. Made up of FIVE (count 'em) flavour segments: Pineapple, Orange, Lemon, Raspberry and Blackcurrant, the Fruit Pastilles lolly is so good it may well surpass the sugar-coated sweets it gets its name from.
