Another recipe from my Grandmother, Ida. She could do wonderful things with gooseberries! My oh my, I miss her cooking! If you like tart with some sweet, you'll enjoy this dessert. Cooking and prep times are approximate.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon butter, melted
1/2 cup milk
2 (16 ounce) cans gooseberries, in syrup
1 cup sugar
2 tablespoons cornstarch
whipped cream

Steps:

  • Dumplings:.
  • Put water on to boil.
  • Mix your ingredients gently, just until mixed.
  • Drop by scant tablespoonful into boiling water.
  • Cover and cook for approximately 15 minutes.
  • Remove from water and either set aside, or put into the gooseberry pool if it is ready.
  • Gooseberries:.
  • Drain gooseberries, reserving the juice.
  • Mix ingredients into a skillet and heat over medium heat until thick.
  • Add the dumplings.
  • Serve warm with whipped cream.
  • Enjoy.

4 cups flour
2 cups shortening
1 cup ice cold water
1 teaspoon salt
4 large apples, peeled and cored
4 tablespoons brown sugar
2 teaspoons cinnamon

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Lightly grease a cake pan.
  • Prepare dumpling pastry. Roll the pastry into a rectangle, 10 by 8 inches. Cut into 4 (4-inch squares) with pastry cutter or knife. Place apple on each square. Spoon 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon into the center of each apple. Moisten corners, pinching edges of pastry to seal. Brush with slightly beaten egg and sprinkle with additional sugar. Bake 30 minutes or until crust is golden and apples are tender.

My mother was one of the best cooks I ever knew. When she made stews we mostly found dumplings in them. We never ate things from packages or microwaves and you sure could taste what food was. That's the only way I cook today - I don't use any electronic gadgets to cook with except an electric stove.

1 cup all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon white sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon margarine
½ cup milk

Steps:

  • Stir together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt in medium size bowl. Cut in butter until crumbly. Stir in milk to make a soft dough.
  • Drop by spoonfuls into boiling stew. Cover and simmer 15 minutes without lifting lid. Serve.
  • To make parsley dumplings, add 1 tablespoon parsley flakes to the dry ingredients.
