HOW TO PRUNE TOMATO PLANTS CORRECTLY: 6 MISTAKES TO …

From bobvila.com
  • Pruning determinate tomato plants. Determinate tomato plants don’t need pruning, other than removal of suckers below the first flower cluster. Pruning above the first flower cluster results in loss of potential fruit because determinate tomato plants have a predetermined number of stems, leaves, and flowers hardwired into their genetic structure.
  • Pruning when the plants are wet. Pruning tomato plants when it’s raining or when they’re wet promotes the spread of disease—specifically, bacterial and fungal pathogens.
  • Pruning with dull or dirty tools. A pruner, or garden clipper, is the best tool to use on tomato plants. These spring-loaded hand tools can cut stems up to 1 inch in diameter.
  • Waiting too long to prune tomato plants. If you put off pruning too long, those little suckers will grow into large, heavy branches that can weigh down the plant and prevent sunlight and air from getting to the center of the plant.
  • Over pruning. Over pruning tomato plants removes too many shade-producing leaves, resulting in the fruit being exposed to the hot sun, causing sun scald.
  • Not topping the main stems at the end of the growing season. When time is running out at the end of the growing season, topping the growing tips will redirect the sugar the plant is producing to the setting fruit.

6 SIMPLE PRUNING TIPS FOR INCREASING YOUR TOMATO HARVEST

From bhg.com
  • Prune all your tomato plants. Tomatoes are grouped by growth habit. A tomato variety is classified as either determinate or indeterminate. Determinate tomatoes grow to about 4 or 5 feet tall, stop growing, and begin producing fruit.
  • Start pruning after flowers appear. Tomato plants begin to produce suckers, or extra stems with foliage you don't need, after the first flower buds appear and open.
  • Remove suckers. In general, tomato plants produce main stems and main leaf branches. Fruit develops on the main leaf branches. Suckers grow in the intersection between the main stem and main leaf branches.
  • Remove lower leaves. Prune plants to remove leaves on the lower 6 to 12 inches of the main stem. Removing these leaves helps prevent disease-causing bacteria and fungi in the soil from getting splashed up onto the plant whenever it rains or you water.
  • Thin out fruit on slicing tomatoes. Tomato varieties that produce slicing fruit, such as 'Celebrity,' 'Jet Star,' and 'Brandywine,' will produce larger fruit if the plant's fruit clusters are reduced to one or two tomatoes.
  • Keep it clean. Pruning creates open wounds on tomato plants. And just like when you get a cut, wounds are entry points for infections. Wash your hands with soap and water or use a hand sanitizer frequently when pruning tomatoes.
