This is how my Granny made sweet tea and it is some kind of sweet. Know that and beware. Pa-Paw used to down 2-3 glasses after working in the garden all day. Back off the sugar if you can't handle it. This one is for true southerners only ;)

6 regular tea bags
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
2 cups boiling water
1 1/2-2 cups sugar
6 cups cold water

Steps:

  • In a large glass measuring cup, place the tea bags and add the baking soda.
  • Pour the boiling water over the tea bags.
  • Cover and steep for 15 minutes.
  • Take out the tea bags and do not squeeze them.
  • Pour the tea mixture into a 2-quart pitcher; add the sugar.
  • Stir until the sugar is dissolved.
  • Add in the cold water.
  • Let cool; chill in the refrigerator and serve over ice.

FOR THE SIMPLE SYRUP:
3/4 c. Granulated Sugar
3/4 c. Water
FOR THE TEA:
10 c. Water, Divided
6 Regular Sized Black Tea Bags
1 pinch Baking Soda
Ice, As Needed
Lemon Slices, To Serve (optional)

Steps:

  • For the simple syrup:Mix sugar and water in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil and allow to boil for about 5-7 minutes. You'll notice the mixture will reduce. Remove from heat and pour into a heatproof bowl and set aside to cool. For the tea:In the same saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil. Remove the pot from the range and place on a trivet. Add tea bags and baking soda. Steep for 5-6 minutes. Remove tea bags without squeezing. Add simple syrup and stir. Pour into a pitcher and add remaining 7 cups water. Serve over ice with lemon slices.

5 cups water
5-6 tea bags (depending on how strong you want your tea)
2/3- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar (depending on how sweet you want it)
Optional: lemon and mint
Ice

Steps:

  • Add water to a medium sized pot and boil over high heat.
  • Once boiling, turn off heat and add tea bags. Steep for 10-25 minutes (depending on strength you prefer).
  • Stir in sugar in increments until it completely dissolves into the hot tea.
  • Remove tea bags from pot then pour tea into a large pitcher.
  • Add enough water to fill the pitcher then add lemon wedges and mint (if you would like for garnish and flavor).
  • Refrigerate until ready to serve. Add ice to glasses and serve.

3/4 - 1 cup granulated sugar (to your sweetness preference)
2 large lemons
water
ice

Steps:

  • Tie the strings of 8 tea bags together in a knot.
  • In a small saucepan combine sugar and 2 cups of water over high heat. Bring to a boil. Add tea bags. Immediately turn off heat. Let sit and steep for about 2 hours.
  • In a gallon pitcher add steeped tea. Wring out tea bags and add to the pitcher as well. Add 3 cups ice. Fill to gallon line with water. Store in refrigerator for up to 1 week.
  • For individual glasses, add a slice of fresh lemon and pour over with iced tea. Enjoy!
