This recipe is used to create our Peppermint House.

Yield Makes 2 1/2 cups

Number Of Ingredients 4

Ingredients

1 pound confectioners' sugar
1/2 cup whipping-quality pasteurized egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 tablespoon water, if needed

Steps:

Beat sugar, whites, and cream of tartar with a mixer on low speed until combined, about 3 minutes. Increase speed to high, and beat until thick and glossy, 7 to 10 minutes. If glue thickens, mix in the water to loosen.

To hold the pieces together instead of icing, this can be used. Do not do this part with the children as it is extremely hot. This is the way my mom does it but I will also credit http://www.kaboose.com

1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup white sugar (1 cup all together but it would not let me enter just one ingredient!)

Steps:

Pour sugar into a heavy pot.
Place over medium heat and cook, stirring often, until the sugar melts and liquefies - about 5 to 10 minutes. Watch closely to avoid burning, and be very careful handling it because it is extremely hot.
Use to glue gingerbread cookie or graham cracker pieces together to make candy houses.

Add the Sugar - While the water is still heating up, add the sugar and mix together. Keep the mixture on the heat until it thickens up and has a slight golden tint.
Remove From Burner - Remove the mixture from the burner, but still keep it warm. This can be done by placing the small saucepan in a large saucepan filled with hot water.
Stir to Make Sure Sugar is Fully Dissolved - Use a spoon to stir the mixture to make sure all the sugar has dissolved into the water. The mixture should be thick and sticky.
