HOMEMADE, INDOOR SAND

Homemade, Indoor Sand image

When I ran across this little keeper, I was looking for things for my book that is including Homemade doughs, etc. for children to play with. Somehow, I hadn't thought of this. When I saw it, I got all tickled inside! I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I spent a lot of time in my younger years at the beach. I loved it! So, when I saw this recipe I was delighted. I will have many great pretend days at the beach with the kids in our family on either too hot to go outside days, or the rainy ones! Enjoy this!

Categories     Other Non-Edibles

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 cup(s) fine sand
1 cup(s) cornstarch
1 teaspoon(s) cream of tartar
1 1/2 cup(s) cold water

Steps:

  • Mix first 3 ingredients together in an old saucepan. Add cold water and cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture is very thick and hard to stir.
  • Remove from heat and let cool until it's lukewarm and easy for little ones (or big ones!) to handle. Form the sand dough into shapes, faces, sand castles, wherever your imagination leads you!
  • I'm thinking this would be really fun to add glitter to as well as maybe keeping some white to paint a a mote, or seaside scene with painted blue on white to be the sea and waves crashing, etc. Hmmmmmmm!
  • These make cute paintable sand ornaments for Mother's Day, Father's Day, Grandparents Day and Christmas (or any day you want to make special) (ornaments and gift tags) or for "Handprints in the sand" projects. Have Fun!!!

  • The first technique is simply by creaming the butter with the sugar before adding the remaining ingredients.
  • The second technique is by browning the butter first. Browning the butter deepens the flavor of the butter with a slightly nuttiness and actually intensifies the butter flavor. In order to brown the butter, melt the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. As the butter melts, swirl the butter around occasionally by gently moving the pan in a circular motion. Continue with this for several minutes, until the butter starts to develop a golden brown color. Once you see the butter beginning to turn color, immediately remove the pan from the heat and let cool. Once the butter has cooled, proceed with making the dough by adding the sugar in step 2.
