EDIBLE GLITTER

Edible Glitter image

You can use granulated white sugar or any of the crystalline sugars (white raw sugar). Avoid brown sugar (too moist) and powdered sugar (not sparkly). Use liquid food coloring because paste coloring is more difficult to mix and may discolor when baked.

Edible Glitter! Recipe - (4.5/5) image

Provided by carvalhohm

Number Of Ingredients 2

1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 to 10 drops food coloring (a drop at a time), adjust for desired color

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F for 10 minutes. Measure sugar into clear jar with tight fitting lid. Add food coloring one drop at a time and screw cap on tightly. SHAKE to combine. Repeat until desired color is reached. Spread sugar out on baking sheet. Bake in oven for 10 minutes at 350°F. You may also store it in an air tight container for several months. This stays drier and stores wonderfully as is but even better if you spread colored sugar in thin layer to air dry for about an hour or microwave in 30 second intervals, stir and repeat for about 1 to 2 minutes or until moisture is evaporated. You can also add a few grains of rice to absorb any moisture. Allow your homemade glitter to cool before using it. Sprinkle, dip or shake onto whatever you like. Put this in a clear salt shaker for easy shaking or pour some into a saucer. Salt may be substituted for sugar, if desired. Can be used around the rim of glasses or as a decorative effect In drinks like a margarita and anywhere you want a salty taste. Notes: Temperature extremes (weather) may cause different results. Be aware that colors like silver are hard to obtain.

HOW TO MAKE EDIBLE GLITTER

wikiHow article about How to Make Edible Glitter.

Provided by wikiHow

Categories     Desserts and Sweets

Number Of Ingredients 2

1⁄4 cup (59 mL) of raw or cane sugar
Liquid, gel, or natural food coloring

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 °F (177 °C) and line a baking tray with parchment paper. You can also use a silicone baking mat if you have one, but do not use plastic wrap since it's not oven safe.
  • Measure out 1⁄4 cup (59 mL) of raw or cane sugar. Look for large grained sugar, usually labeled as "raw" or "cane." Granulated sugar has much finer grains and will yield less sparkly results. If your goal is to add color rather than shine, granulated sugar will work fine.
  • Mix sugar with a few drops of food coloring in a small bowl. You can use either gel paste or liquid food coloring. You can also make your own food dyes out of natural ingredients like vegetables, fruit juices, and spices. Continue to mix until the color is fully and evenly incorporated into the sugar. To create new hues, try mixing different food colorings. Green glitter, for example, can be made with 1 drop of blue and 2 drop of yellow food coloring.
  • Spread the sugar across the lined baking tray. Use an offset spatula or spoon to make sure the sugar is evenly distributed. The thinner you spread the sugar, the more quickly it will bake.
  • Bake the sugar in the oven for 7-9 minutes. Once it's fully dried out, remove the tray from the oven right away: if you over-bake the sugar, it will melt and create a sticky mess!
  • Let the glitter cool and then break it up with your fingers. After giving the sugar about one hour to cool fully, it should be ready to work with. If there are any clumps, simply use your hands to break them up.
  • Store the glitter in an airtight container for up to 6 months. The color and sparkle may fade significantly over time, so try to keep the containers away from direct light.

Try making several colors and/or mixing two or more food colors to make a 'new' color. Great way to teach kids colors, math =measuring and so on. Time 2m

Yield 1/2 cup

Number Of Ingredients 2

1/2 cup coarse salt (non iodized) or 1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 -10 drops food coloring, adjust for desired color

Steps:

  • Measure salt or sugar into a clear jar with a tight fitting lid. Add food coloring one drop at a time and screw the cap on tightly. SHAKE to combine. Repeat until desired color is reached.
  • Sprinkle, dip or shake onto whatever you like. I like to put this in a clear salt shaker for easy shaking or pour some into a saucer and dip the wet rim of an empty glass in it to make the glass pretty!
  • Tip: This will keep for a very long time. This stays drier and stores wonderfully as is but even better if you spread colored salt/sugar in a thin layer to air dry for about an hour or microwave in 30 second intervals, stir and repeat for about 1-2 minutes or until moisture is evaporated. You can also add a few grains of rice to absorb any moisture.

  • Preparing Easy Salt Glitter Pour some salt into a sealable plastic bag. To avoid having to wash any bowls or dishes, you can mix your salt glitter in a plastic bag that seals closed.
  • Baking Salt Glitter Preheat the oven. To ensure that the salt glitter dries and the color sets, it helps to bake it in the oven. Set your oven temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (177 degrees Celsius) and allow it to heat fully so it’s hot enough when you’re ready to dry the glitter.
  • Creating Glow-in-the-Dark Salt Glitter Spoon some salt into sealable plastic bags. Open several sealable plastic bags, making sure that you have one for every shade of glitter that you plan to make.
