BLOODY BRAIN

Bloody Brain image

Turn classic cocktail shrimp into a gruesome Halloween hors d'oeuvre that will terrify and delight party-goers. Arrange shrimp in a deep bowl, pour a gelatin-based cocktail sauce over the shrimp, and chill until set.

Provided by Martha Stewart

Categories     Food & Cooking     Appetizers

Number Of Ingredients 8

2 3/4 pounds large shrimp, peeled, deveined, and cooked
1 tablespoon powdered gelatin
1 teaspoon finely grated fresh horseradish
1 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt
1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice
3/4 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Prepared cocktail sauce, for serving

Steps:

  • Arrange shrimp in a 6 1/2- to 7-cup brain-shaped mold with tails facing upwards in vertical rows.
  • Fill a glass bowl with 1 2/3 cups cold water; sprinkle gelatin over water and let stand 5 minutes. In a small saucepan, cook gelatin mixture over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until gelatin has dissolved. Whisk in lemon juice, horseradish, salt, Old Bay, and cayenne pepper until well combined.
  • Pour gelatin mixture over shrimp in mold. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing down on the surface. Fit a plate into mold and weight with cans. Refrigerate until set, about 5 hours. Invert mold onto a serving platter; serve with cocktail sauce.

Realistic, creepy, AND yummy. Make it the day before your Halloween party so it has time to set. Serve with assorted crackers, baguette slices, cucumber slices, and celery sticks.

Provided by Cammie

Categories     Shrimp Dip

Time 8h25m

Yield 20

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 (.25 ounce) package unflavored gelatin
½ cup cold water
1 ½ ounces Asian bean thread vermicelli noodles
4 cups boiling water, or as needed
1 (8 ounce) jar cocktail sauce
2 pounds cooked shrimp - peeled, tails removed, and shrimp chopped
1 stalk celery, chopped, or more to taste
½ (8 ounce) can water chestnuts, chopped, or more to taste
1 brain-shaped gelatin mold
1 (8 ounce) jar cocktail sauce

Steps:

  • Sprinkle gelatin over 1/2 cup cold water in a bowl and set aside to soften. Place bean thread noodles in heatproof bowl and top with 4 cups boiling water or amount needed to cover. Allow noodles to soften for 5 minutes.
  • Pour 1 jar cocktail sauce into a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Stir in softened gelatin; cook, stirring frequently, until completely melted. Remove pan from heat.
  • Combine shrimp, celery, and water chestnuts in a large bowl. Drain noodles and shake off excess water; add to bowl. Add warmed gelatin mixture and stir until well combined.
  • Lightly grease gelatin mold. Press mixture firmly into mold, making sure all gaps are filled. Cover filled mold with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  • Invert mold onto a serving platter (see Cook's Notes). Drizzle cocktail sauce around the edges to create pool of "blood."
