These mashed sweet potatoes are the perfect holiday side dish. They're creamy, flavorful, and blissfully easy to make.

5 large sweet potatoes (3 pounds)
3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil or melted unsalted butter
⅔ cups almond milk or any milk
2 teaspoons chopped fresh rosemary
2 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
1 teaspoon sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
Fresh thyme leaves or chopped parsley for garnish (optional)
Pat of butter (for serving, optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a baking sheet with foil.
  • Use a fork to poke a few holes into the sweet potatoes. Place on the baking sheet and roast until very tender, about 60 minutes.
  • Scoop the cooked sweet potato flesh out of the skins and place in a food processor. Add the olive oil, milk, rosemary, garlic, ginger, salt, and several grinds of pepper and process until creamy. If you prefer a chunkier consistency, mash with a potato masher. Season to taste.
  • Transfer to a bowl and garnish with the thyme. Serve with a pat of butter, if desired.

Steps:

  • Bring a large pot of water to boil on high heat.
  • Peel the sweet potatoes with a hand peeler.
  • Dice the potatoes into chunks and place them into the pot. Cook the potatoes for 20-30 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender.
  • Drain the potatoes over a colander.
  • Place the potatoes in a large mixing bowl and mash them with a hand masher or electric beater.

This is my favorite creamy mashed sweet potatoes recipe with spicy chipotle, perfect for the holiday table or for anyone who loves sweet potatoes.

2 large sweet potatoes (about 2 pounds)
2 tablespoons butter
3.5 ounces chipotles in adobo (1/2 a can - save the rest)
2-4 tablespoons crema or sour cream (depending on how creamy you want them)
1 tablespoon garlic powder
Salt and pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Peel and rinse the sweet potatoes, then chop them into small cubes.
  • Set them into a pot and cover them with water. Add a teaspoon of salt. Boil the sweet potatoes until they are fork tender, about 10 minutes. Drain.
  • Add the sweet potatoes to a large bowl and add the butter, chipotles in adobo, crema or sour cream, garlic powder, and salt and pepper to taste.

3 lbs Sweet Potatoes (washed, peeled and cut into 1" cubes)
1/4 cup Butter (plus a couple tablespoons for garnish on top)
1/2 cup Half and Half (can substitute heavy cream or milk)
1/2 cup Brown Sugar (or Maple Syrup)
1 tsp Salt (or to taste)
1/4 tsp Cinnamon
2 Tablespoons Parsley (chopped, for optional garnish)

Steps:

  • Wash and peel sweet potatoes and cut into 1" cubes.
  • Place the sweet potatoes in a large pot, add 2 teaspoons of salt and cover with hot water.
  • Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20-30 minutes, or until the vegetables are very tender and no longer stick to a fork when poked.
  • Once cooked, drain the water then return vegetables to the pot. Add in the butter, half and half, brown sugar and about 1 teaspoon of salt (more or less, to taste).
  • Mash sweet potatoes with a potato masher or potato ricer, getting out all of the largest chunks and mashing as chunky or smooth as you like. (Note: you may also use a standing mixer with the whisk attachment, but just be sure not to overmix or it will get gummy.)

3 lbs. sweet potatoes (peeled, chopped into 2" cubed)
6 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/3 cup milk
1/4 cup sour cream
3 tablespoons pure maple syrup (more or less to taste)
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2-3/4 teaspoon salt (plus more for boiling)
1/2 tsp EACH garlic powder, dried parsley
1/4 tsp EACH dried thyme, pepper
1/8 tsp EACH ground nutmeg, ground cloves
3 tablespoons chopped chives

Steps:

  • Add potatoes to a Dutch oven and add just enough water to cover potatoes. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt. Bring to a boil (I cover to speed up the process, then uncover); reduce heat and simmer 10-15 minutes or until very tender when pierced with a fork; drain VERY WELL. Transfer drained potatoes to a mixing bowl.
  • Heat butter and milk in the microwave for 1 1/2 minutes or until the butter is mostly melted. Add butter/milk to sweet potatoes along with all remaining ingredients except chives. Beat with a hand held mixer for a fluffier and smoother consistence or mash with a potato masher or fork for a chunkier/heavier consistency.

3 pounds Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 2-inch dice
Kosher salt
2 cups whole milk
1 stick unsalted butter, cut into pieces
Freshly ground black pepper
1/2 cup creme fraiche, mascarpone or cilantro or basil pesto, optional

Steps:

  • Put the potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water by 2 inches. Add 2 tablespoons of kosher salt, bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, about 25 minutes.
  • While the potatoes are cooking, heat the milk in a small saucepan over high heat, bring to a boil, cover and remove from the heat. Keep warm until the potatoes finish cooking.
  • Drain the potatoes in a colander and return them to the saucepan over low heat. Stir the potatoes for about a minute in the saucepan to evaporate any additional water.
  • Put the potatoes into a ricer or food mill set over a large bowl. Stir in the butter then 1 1/2 cups to all of the warm milk until creamy. Stir in creme fraiche, mascarpone or pesto, if desired. Season with salt and pepper.
