Faken (Veggie Bacon) image

This marinated smoked tofu fries up into crisp veggie bacon! Freezing the tofu and thawing helps to improve the texture, and makes it easier to slice.

Time 20m

Yield 4

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (7.5 ounce) package smoked firm tofu, frozen and thawed
1 tablespoon nutritional yeast
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons maple syrup
1 dash liquid smoke flavoring
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon garlic powder
2 tablespoons butter or margarine

Steps:

  • Slice the thawed tofu into very thin slices (like bacon). In a medium bowl, stir together the yeast, water, maple syrup, liquid smoke, soy sauce, onion powder and garlic powder. Place the tofu strips into the bowl to marinate for at least 10 minutes.
  • Heat butter or margarine in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Quickly fry tofu strips until crisp, turning once, about 5 minutes. Drain on paper towels, and serve immediately.

HOMEMADE FRESH BACON BITS

Homemade Fresh Bacon Bits image

Fresh is just so much nicer then the pre-packaged kind that uses picnic bacon and tastes like cardboard. These fry quickly and you don't have to crumble the slices after frying them. There is no need to separate the pieces. They will separate during cooking. Use these in any recipe calling for crumbled bacon or bacon bits. Perfect for salads and baked potato toppings or twice baked potatoes.

Time 10m

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

1 lb bacon
1/8 teaspoon black pepper (optional)

Steps:

  • Partially freeze your package of bacon so that it holds together easier while slicing.
  • Use a sharp knife and cut the frozen bacon into long strips about 1/4 inch wide.
  • Turn the bacon and cut the strips into pieces also about 1/4 in wide.
  • Sprinkle with pepper.
  • Fry over a medium high heat until crisp.
  • Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • You can freeze this for later use by placing the bacon bits in a single layer on a cooking sheet. Once they are frozen, place them in a zip lock bag for use in recipes, salads or baked potatoes. Freezing this way allows you to be able to take out just what you need without thawing the entire bag of frozen solid bacon bits.

BACON BITS

Bacon Bits image

This is an inexpensive solution to buying prepackaged bags of bacon bits. It is very convenient and time saving.

Provided by Sharon in Ontario.

Categories     Pork

Time 20m

Yield 10 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 2

454 g bacon
1 teaspoon bacon grease

Steps:

  • Fry bacon (or cook in microwave) until bacon is crisp.
  • Cool.
  • Blot with paper towel to absorb excess grease.
  • Crumble and store in ziploc bag in freezer for whenever you need bacon bits!
  • I don't add the bacon grease; however, I need two ingredients for the recipe!
  • This is not so much a correction as it is an addition we have recently discovered. We will now leave the bacon whole in the plastic ziploc. If we want bacon and eggs we just take what we want and heat in microwave. If we want some for salads we just crumble and use.

HOMEMADE VEGAN IMITATION BACON BITS!

Homemade Vegan Imitation Bacon Bits! image

I came across this and wowsa, what a great idea! I no longer have to search for bacon bits that do not contain natrural flavoring! So easy to make at home. You can add the maple extract or not, it's good both ways. I used an idea from a reviewer to tweek the recipe just a little. Thank you Joni Marie Newman. Update: I have added more flavor by using soy sauce and molasses.

Provided by Sharon123

Categories     Vegan

Time 20m

Yield 1 cup, about

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 tablespoons liquid smoke (30 ml)
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon molasses
3/4 cup water (about)
1 cup textured vegetable protein, granules (TVP-96 g)
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 -3 drops red food coloring (optional)
3 tablespoons canola oil (or other neutral vegetable oil-45 ml)
2 drops maple extract (optional)

Steps:

  • Add the liquid smoke, soy sauce, molasses to a measuring cup , then fill with water to get one cup.
  • In a microwave safe dish, mix together liquid smoke mixture, TVP and salt.
  • Cover tightly with plastic wrap and microwave on high for five minutes. Carefully remove the wrap.
  • Preheat a skillet with the oil.
  • If using maple extract, add to the reconstituted TVP now and mix well.
  • Add reconstituted TVP to the pan and toss to make sure it all gets coated with oil. Pan fry until desired crispness. Stir often. You don't necessarily want to "brown" them, but dry them out. This should take about ten minutes.
  • Allow to cool completely before transferring to an airtight container.
  • Store in the refrigerator. The bits should last at least a week. Or you can store in the freezer, they will last a long time!
