GRILLED CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Grilled Cedar Plank Salmon image

Using a cedar plank to grill salmon is an effortless way to add enormous flavor to your dish. The fish takes on a lovely smokiness, stays wonderfully moist and the skin doesn't stick to the grates. We spiced ours up with a maple-ginger marinade and whipped up a quick side salad for a tasty, incredibly easy weeknight meal.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 1h30m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/2 cup rice wine vinegar
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons grated ginger (from a 2-inch knob)
3 cloves garlic, grated
1/2 cup olive oil
Four 6-ounce salmon fillets, skin on (about 1 1/2 pounds)
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
One 10-ounce bag coleslaw mix
1/2 cup sliced almonds
1/2 cup sesame sticks or wonton chips

Steps:

  • Soak a cedar grill plank in water for at least 1 hour and up to 4 hours. Preheat the grill to medium.
  • Mix the rice wine vinegar, maple syrup, soy sauce, ginger and garlic in a medium bowl. Slowly drizzle in the olive oil, whisking constantly, until emulsified. Reserve 1/4 cup for the salad dressing and set aside. Pour the remaining mixture over the salmon and let marinate in the refrigerator for 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, place the soaked cedar plank in the center of the preheated grill. Close the lid and let the plank heat until you hear it start to crack, about 15 minutes. Place the salmon fillets, skin-side down, on the plank. Season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper. Close the lid and cook until the salmon is opaque throughout and large flakes break off when flecked with a fork, 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the plank from the grill and serve the salmon from the plank (the fish will slide right off with a metal spatula, leaving the skin behind). Discard the plank.
  • While the salmon is cooking, add the coleslaw mix, almonds, sesame sticks or wonton chips and the reserved dressing to a large bowl and toss until well combined. Serve alongside the salmon.

CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Cooking salmon over indirect heat on the grill brings smoky flavor to Bobby Flay's recipe for Cedar Plank Salmon from BBQ with Bobby Flay on Food Network.

Provided by Food Network

Categories     main-dish

Time 2h45m

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 cedar plank (6 by 14 inches)
2 salmon fillets (1 1/2 pounds total)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 tablespoons Dijon mustard
6 tablespoons brown sugar

Steps:

  • Soak cedar plank in salted water for 2 hours, then drain. Remove skin from salmon fillet. Remove any remaining bones. Rinse the salmon under cold running water and pat dry with paper towels. Generously season the salmon with salt and pepper on both sides. Lay the salmon (on what was skin-side down) on the cedar plank and carefully spread the mustard over the top and sides. Place the brown sugar in a bowl and crumble between your fingers, then sprinkle over the mustard.
  • Set grill for indirect grilling and heat to medium-high. Place the cedar plank in the center of the hot grate, away from the heat. Cover the grill and cook until cooked through, around 20 to 30 minutes. The internal temperature should read 135 degrees F. Transfer the salmon and plank to a platter and serve right off the plank.
  • Cook's Note: A direct method to grill the salmon may be used. Soak the cedar plank well. Spread the mustard and brown sugar on the salmon, but do not place the fish on the plank. Set up the grill for direct grilling on medium-high. When ready to cook, place the plank on the hot grate and leave it until there is a smell of smoke, about 3 to 4 minutes. Turn the plank over and place the fish on top. Cover the grill and cook until the fish is cooked through, reaching an internal temperature of 135 degrees F. Check the plank occasionally. If the edges start to catch fire, mist with water, or move the plank to a cooler part of the grill.

CEDAR-PLANK SALMON

Cedar-Plank Salmon image

Where this recipe calls for lemon zest and rosemary, the native Coast Salish Indians on Vancouver Island would use grand-fir needles. Either way, the salmon takes on a light, smoky woodiness from grilling on a cedar plank, for a lovely pairing of earth and ocean.

Yield Makes 6 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 tablespoons grainy mustard
2 tablespoons mild honey or pure maple syrup
1 teaspoon minced rosemary
1 tablespoon grated lemon zest
1 (2-pounds) salmon fillet with skin (1 1/2 inches thick)
Equipment: a cedar grilling plank (about 15 by 6 inches)

Steps:

  • Soak cedar grilling plank in water to cover 2 hours, keeping it immersed.
  • Prepare grill for direct-heat cooking over medium-hot charcoal (medium-high heat for gas); see Grilling Procedure . Open vents on bottom and lid of charcoal grill.
  • Stir together mustard, honey, rosemary, zest, and 1/2 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Spread mixture on flesh side of salmon and let stand at room temperature 15 minutes.
  • Put salmon on plank, skin side down (if salmon is too wide for plank, fold in thinner side to fit). Grill, covered with lid, until salmon is just cooked through and edges are browned, 13 to 15 minutes. Let salmon stand on plank 5 minutes before serving.

CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Cedar Plank Salmon image

Cedar Plank Salmon comes out juicy, with caramelized Thai sweet chili sauce on top and incredible woodsy flavors. It is easy to make as no marinating is required and salmon doesn't fall apart. This grilled salmon will blow everyone's mind!

Provided by Olena Osipov

Categories     Dinner

Time 1h35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 lbs salmon fillet (skin on or off)
1/2 cup maple syrup
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp white or rice vinegar
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 small garlic clove (grated)
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp red chili pepper flakes

Steps:

  • Soak cedar plank in water for at least 1 hour. I like to fill up sink with a few inches of water.
  • In a small saucepan, add maple syrup, water, vinegar, cornstarch, garlic, salt and red chili pepper flakes; whisk well.
  • Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low and simmer for 7-10 minutes or until thickened.
  • Reserve 1/2 cup sauce for cedar plank salmon and transfer remainder to a glass jar. Use with meats, seafood, vegetables and for dipping. Highly recommend to make Thai Salmon that everyone will rave about for weeks!
  • Preheat grill to medium-high heat (500 degrees F). Place salmon on pre-soaked cedar plank and brush with half of the reserved 1/2 cup Thai sauce. Place on a grill, cover and cook for 10 minutes.
  • Open the grill, brush salmon with remaining sauce, cover and grill for another 10 minutes or until the thermometer inserted in the deepest spot reads 130 degrees F.
  • Cut into 8 slices and serve warm right off the plank placed on a platter. You can brush salmon with more Thai sauce if desired.

EASY CEDAR-PLANK SALMON

Easy Cedar-plank Salmon image

Once the boards are cut to size, this is a very simple way to cook salmon. As long as you don't overcook the salmon, it comes out moist and flavorful. Grilling time depends on how hot your coals are and how thick the board.

Provided by Akikobay

Categories     Very Low Carbs

Time 50m

Yield 2-4 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 salmon fillet (de-boned, skinned, and cleaned)
salt
pepper
brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter, cut into small bits
1 cedar plank (untreated, cut to fit the grill)

Steps:

  • Cut a cedar plank to fit your barbeque grill.
  • You won't be saving this, so no need to be fancy.
  • (We usually get a 1"-thick, 12" wide board and cut it into appropriately sized pieces.) Completely submerse the cedar plank in water for 15 minutes.
  • Put the salmon"skin-side" down on the wet plank.
  • (Remember that anything hanging off the side of the board will burn, so try to maneuver the salmon all onto the board.) Salt and pepper to taste.
  • If you have a favorite herb or spice, you might want to add a sprinkle now.
  • Pat a thickish coating of brown sugar evenly over the top of the salmon.
  • We like our salmon well-glazed, so we pat about a 1/4" layer onto the fish.
  • Dot with little chunks of the butter, use more or less to your taste.
  • Grill (on a rack) above medium hot coals until the fish is firm in the center.
  • To serve, just pop the plank onto a platter and cut pieces off the salmon at the table.

LEMON HERB CEDAR PLANK SALMON

Lemon Herb Cedar Plank Salmon image

Juicy, buttery cedar plank salmon is a very simple dinner but has a lot of delicious flavor. This salmon recipe features simple ingredients like herbs, butter, and lemon that compliment the natural salmon flavor perfectly.

Provided by Lyuba

Categories     Main Course

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 cedar plank (or other wood plank)
1 lb skin on salmon fillets
1 tbsp canola oil (to rub the skin)
2 tbsp butter
1/2 lemon
1 tbsp fresh minced parsley
1 tbsp fresh minced dill weed
salt
black pepper

Steps:

  • Soak the wood plank! Fill a dish that is bigger than the plank, like a casserole pan or an aluminum baking pan, with water and then place the wooden plank into it. The plank will float so you want to put something heavy on top and make sure the plank is submerged under water. Soak it for 1-2 hours.
  • Slice lemon and cold butter into several slices.
  • Rub bottom of the salmon skin with some oil.
  • Season salmon with salt and pepper on all sides and sprinkle herbs over the top and sides evenly.
  • Place a couple of slices of butter on top of each salmon and a couple slices of slices of lemon over butter. Set it aside until ready to put on the plank to grill.
  • Preheat the grill to medium heat with a two-zone fire just in case. Place soaked wood planks on the grill and heat it up for about 5 minutes. Flip the plank and place salmon on it, skin down.
  • Close the lid and cook salmon until it's done. I prefer to cook it until it reaches 135° in the thickest part. (USDA recommends salmon safe temperature to be 145° but some people feel that it is overdone.)Depending on the thickness of salmon piece, that could take from 12-20 minutes.(A whole salmon filet that is thick could take well over 20 minutes. You will have to check the temperature with an instant read thermometer.)

  • An hour or so before you plan to make your cedar plank salmon, submerge your planks in water. You must soak the planks so that they don’t burn when you set them onto the grill; once soaked, they’ll release steam and smoke when heated.
  • Set up your grill so that you’ll be able to cook the cedar planked salmon over indirect heat by only loading one side of the grate with coals; if you’re using gas, turn half the burners up to medium-high and leave the other burners off; basically, you want to leave enough space on the grill for the cedar to steam rather than to singe over a flame.
  • While the grill is warming up, combine the ras el hanout, garlic, olive oil, lemon juice and zest, and salt and pepper in a shallow dish or zip top bag; then, add salmon fillets, coating in the mixture. Allow the salmon to marinate for 10 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine pomegranate molasses, honey or maple syrup, and soy sauce. Set aside.
