Making pie crust from scratch is like kid's play when you use Gramma John's Pie Crust recipe. It's simple and delicious!

Provided by Jessica Fisher

Categories     Dessert

Time 25m

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup cold butter (cut into chunks)
1 to 2 tbsp water (cold )

Steps:

  • In a medium bowl, combine together the flour and salt. Add the butter chunks and cut them into the flour mixture with a pastry blender, or two knives held together. You can also use a food processor for quicker work. Kids can do this with a fork if that is easier for them. Work these ingredients together until they form pea-sized crumbs.
  • Quickly stir in the cold water a tablespoon at a time and combine until a large pea size clumps form. Transfer these to the pie plate.
  • Pat the dough into a pie plate, pushing the dough across the bottom of the pie plate and up the sides.
  • Use as is in recipes that call for an unbaked pie shell. For recipes that call for a pre-baked crust, bake it for 10-15 minutes at 350 degrees until light golden brown. Cool completely before pouring in your filling.

MY NO ROLL PIE CRUST

My No Roll Pie Crust image

The only pie crust I will use anymore. Its flaky and slightly sugary and oh so easy to do. Note: due to some major discrepencies please use a good quality oil, preferably a vegetable and a good name brand like Mazola, it may not seem like it will make a difference but in the end it will, also use new oil not something that has been sitting around for a while.

PAT-IN PIE CRUST (NO-ROLL)

Pat-In Pie Crust (No-Roll) image

I'm afraid I'm going to lose this! My neighbor gave it to me--she knows I don't make pie crust--I usually buy the premade ones, but she assured me I could do this. It was wonderful in her quiche--(she said to leave out the vanilla for savory pies.) It's a little different than some of the other no-roll crusts I've seen, so I want to make sure it's safe here!

EASIEST NO-ROLL PIE CRUST... PAT IN THE PAN

Easiest No-roll Pie Crust... pat in the pan image

Easiest Pie Crust Ever! Always flaky and anyone can do it. It's patted down right in the pie-pan, no rolling, just spreads easily with your fingers. As a novice cook, I found this in a Mommy-Recipe-Exchange-Cookbook at my son's elementary school in the 1960's and don't know its origin. I've call it Newly-Wed Pie Crust because I've passed it on to young brides with success. I've used it all these years and now my grown kids do too. It's never "card-boardy." I think you'll like it and welcome your comments :)

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 cup(s) oil (scant) not quite to the top
2 tablespoon(s) milk
1 teaspoon(s) milk (yes - 2tb + 1 tsp milk)
1 cup(s) flour
1/4 teaspoon(s) salt
2 teaspoon(s) sugar
SO EASY!

Steps:

  • In small bowl whisk oil and milk gently until cloudy, set aside.
  • In a 9-inch pie pan (glass is best*) combine the full cup flour with the salt/sugar, stirring with fork until well blended. Make a well (space) in the center and pour oil/milk mixture in it. Use fork to combine all ingredients just until dry ingredients are no longer dry and mixture is spreadable. Dip fingers in flour and use fingers to pat around evenly in pie pan. *By using a glass pan you can hold it up to the light and see where the thicker parts are and spread it around evenly. It is a light, soft dough and easy to spread. Use fork tines to score rim and poke around the pieshell to prevent bubbling. Bake in a 400 preheated oven until edges are brown, about 10 to 15 min. Keep an eye on it using fork to poke down any bubbling.
  • This is best for a pre-baked single shell pie such as for lemon meringue. Can be used raw and filled with fruit in a standard recipe but for the top crust you will have to use a traditional rolled crust recipe.
