DEB'S PEPPERMINT DISHWASHER DETERGENT
Like many people, I've tried for years to develop a cheap, natural recipe for dishwasher detergent that really works. This recipe, combined with my Homemade Jet Dry Rinse, comes close in performance to Cascade, and far outperforms commercial "green" products. Kudos to thenewhomemaker.com for the tip about citric acid. (I order citric acid online from mountainroseherbs.com at $3.50/lb.) **TIP: If you have very soft water, you might want to reduce or omit the baking soda to prevent a filmy buildup. This was developed for a hard water region of North Texas.**

Steps:
- Mix all ingredients in large bowl.
- STORE IN AIR-TIGHT ZIP-LOK BAG, NOT IN A JAR! (It clumps if it gets too damp, and if it's in a bag a quick squeeze breaks it up. In a jar it becomes a rock.).
- To use: Fill prewash and wash compartments completely, and use heat boost setting if available. Adjust amount of detergent depending on results in your area: reduce amount if you experience white residue; increase amount if dishes don't come clean. Strongly recommend using rinse aid as well.

HOMEMADE DISHWASHER DETERGENT
Detergent for the dishwasher is SO expensive. I searched the net for a home-made alternative and developed this simple recipe. We've been using it for a while now and it washes the dishes even better than the shop bought variety. The amount needed will depend on how soft your water is - we find 1 tablespoon is enough, but we're on tank water. You might need 2 tablespoons if you're on hard town water. Instead of Rinse Aid, we just use white vinegar.

Steps:
- Place all ingredients in the bowl of a food processor.
- Process until washing soda crystals are reduced to powder.
- Store in airtight container.
- Use 1- 2 tablespoons per load in your dishwasher.
- (To save even more money, substitute Rinse Aid with white vinegar.).

- Vinegar. Do you have a bottle of vinegar in your pantry? It is not only a much cheaper alternative to rinse aid, but a safer, natural option. - Hydrogen Peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide is a non-toxic bleach alternative. It is often used in homemade cleaning products as a whitener and disinfectant. It is an ideal homemade dishwasher rinse aid as it helps to combat smells while leaving your dishes (and dishwasher) sparkling.
- Lemons or Lemon Juice. Lemons are one of my best tools when it comes to natural cleaning hacks. They contain citric acid, which can help to break down the mineral deposits on dishes and glassware.
- Citric Acid. Citric acid is a great toxic-free alternative and my preferred natural rinse aid agent for the dishwasher. It helps to break down hard water, balances pH levels, and encourages soap in dishwasher detergent to work better.
