CROCK POT HAM BONE AND BEANS

Crock Pot Ham Bone and Beans image

Many variations to Ham Bone (or Hocks) and beans but this is pretty much how I remember it from my childhood. I find by not soaking the beans they have better texture and flavor.I use Great Northern Beans as my favorite choice of bean for this recipe. I have used 15 bean mix with good results just omit the ham flavor packet.

CROCK POT HAM AND BEANS

This is cheap eating at it's best. Really good for scraping by at the end of the month if your cash gets low. Goes best with freshly baked corn muffins drizzled with honey.

HAM AND BEANS (CROCK-POT)

Ham and Beans (Crock-Pot) image

This is how I have been making my ham and beans for years. . .I think you either love these or hate these!!! Total comfort food for me, as I make them very similar to my dad's recipe which I had growing up. Perfect served with corn bread on a cool fall or winter day. I add 3 T of Andrea's Sauce (a savory steak marinade with flavors of worchester, garlic, and onion), but Recipezaar does not recognize it. This freezes well, so don't be afraid to serve it once and freeze the leftovers for later!

Time 7h5m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 lb great northern bean
1/2 onion, chopped
2 stalks celery, chopped
1 cup shredded carrot
8 garlic cloves
1 cup cubed ham
1 bay leaf
7 cups water
4 teaspoons chicken bouillon
1 ham bone

Steps:

  • Rinse and sort thru beans (has anyone ever really found a rock in these?). Cover with water and let sit overnight.
  • In the morning, drain water, rinse again and place beans in the crockpot. Dump in all of the other ingredients (except ham bone) and give it a few good stirs.
  • Put the ham bone in the crockpot, cover and cook on high for 6-8 hours.
  • Remove the bay leaf, ham bone and fish out any bones that may have fallen off during cooking. Stir the beans a few times. Remove 1 cup of the beans and place in a bowl, mash them with a potato masher or back of a spoon, then return to the beans and stir; this helps thicken it up a bit.
  • Take off any meat left on the ham bone, chop and return it to the crockpot.
  • Stir again and serve!

NAVY BEAN SOUP IN THE CROCK POT

This is my adaptation of a recipe I found in "The Unwatched Pot". Total comfort food. Everyone in the family likes this one. It freezes very well and is creamier when it thaws.

CROCKPOT PINTO BEANS AND HAM

Crockpot Pinto Beans and Ham image

This recipe came from Mommy's Kitchen. Prep time does not include time to soak beans the night before.

Provided by Lavender Lynn

Categories     Beans

Time 9h

Yield 8 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 (16 ounce) package dry pinto beans
2 tablespoons baking soda
1 tablespoon fiesta pinto bean seasoning
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/2 tablespoon pepper
1 small onion, cut into chunks
ham hocks, ham bone or 2 cups cooked ham

Steps:

  • Sort your beans and remove and broken pieces or pebbles. I use one 16 oz package of beans. Place in a large bowl or pot, covering with water.
  • Add the baking soda to the water, and let the beans soak at least 6 hours or overnight. After 6 hours or overnight drain the water from the beans.
  • Add the beans to a 6 quart crock pot and cover with fresh water. You want the beans to be covered by at least one inch.
  • Add the pinto bean seasoning, sugar, vegetable oil, pepper and onion. Taste the beans after several hours of cooking and add more seasonings if you think it needs it. I used a total of one tablespoons pepper.
  • Add one of the following for additional seasoning, one ham hock, ham bone, or slice of country ham cut into pieces.
  • Place lid on crock pot and cook on high for about 6-8 hours. make sure the beans stay covered with water, so check occasionally. If you need more water, then add it. The beans should have a soup consistency.
  • In 6 hours, test beans and if they are cooked. Remove ham bone and pull of the meat or remove meat from ham hock and serve. Don't forget the wedge of cornbread.

CANNED NAVY BEANS WITH HAM

This is terrific. I would make this again it's so delicious. Recipe courtesy of Kathey JO Hickey Van Otten.

Time 6h15m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 lbs dried navy beans
1 gallon water, will probably add more as it is cooked
1 lb cooked ham, chopped into pieces
2 onions, chopped
1 tablespoon sea salt or 1 tablespoon kosher salt
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon parsley, chopped
1 tablespoon basil, chopped
2 tablespoons of crushed garlic

Steps:

  • She cooks beans in the crockpot--I boiled mine on the stove.
  • You will want a soupy gravy water when it is nearing to be finished cooking.
  • Add the ham halfway through the cooking period, and let it cook to spread the flavor throughout the beans. Same with the seasonings and onions. This soup will be soupy, thick, but not real thick. It is still a soup.
  • Have jars ready to fill. I use the quart size, but you can do pint also. Fill the jars to about an inch to top and seal. Be sure to wipe the rim cleam or it won't seal. You should be able to fill about 8 to 10 quart jars.
  • Place in pressure cooker and follow directions that is on the cooker. Should be about 20 to 30 minutes after the whistling starts. Let it cool naturally before taking lid off and then when cool take out of canner and label.
  • To use, add some water with the beans when you take it out of the jar. Don't make it runny. Cook some pan bread up with it or cornbread.
