Bagels. Costco’s bagels are about four ounces each and cost about 50 cents. Trader Joe’s are cheaper — about 40 cents each — but slightly smaller at three ounces (which might be a good thing, depending on you or your toaster).
Bakery French Bread. All three stores offered a crusty loaf of artisan bread under their store label, although only the loaves from Costco and Whole Foods are baked on site.
Whole-Wheat Sliced Sandwich Bread. Although Costco’s big loaves are still the best bargain, it was surprising to find out that Whole Foods’ store brand sandwich bread costs the same as Trader Joe’s.
Sandwich Rolls. If you’re looking for long sandwich rolls, like you’d get for, say, a steak or sub sandwich, don’t go to Trader Joe’s. The bread selection just isn’t varied enough to stock a specialty item like this.
Hot Dog Buns. You get a ton of buns at Costco, but you better not have jumbo hot dogs to go with them. At just 1 1/2 ounces each, they’re smaller than what you get at the other stores.
Hamburger Buns. Once again, you can’t beat Costco’s price (although you’ve got to have room to store or people to eat all those buns). We noticed that Whole Foods’ buns were on the small side (less than 2 ounces each).

Olive oil. If you use olive oil on a regular basis, check out Costco's organic, extra virgin olive oil. "It's really good quality at a really good price," John Karolefski, grocery store analyst and editor of Grocery Stories, tells CNBC Make It.
Maple syrup. A "big cult item" is Costco's Kirkland organic pure maple syrup, Haugsven says. Costco sells a 33.8-ounce bottle for $12.79. This is an especially good value because coupons for, or sales on, pure and/or organic maple syrup are rare, according to the Krazy Coupon Lady.
Snack foods. Snack foods are generally cheaper at Costco when the store offers coupons for them, Haugsven says: "They won't tell you the prices, they'll just say $3 off Cheez-Its, and then you go into the store and you'll usually get a great deal on those items."
Vanilla. One of the best deals at Costco is on vanilla extract, Demer says. Costco sells its Kirkland pure vanilla extract for $26.99 for a 16-fluid ounce bottle and "it's the good stuff," she says.
Wine. "The wine is absolutely one of the best deals," Demer says. "Any time there's any comparison of store brands' quality, Trader Joe's and Costco are always at the top."
