2 tablespoons good olive oil
2 cups (1/2 inch diced) sourdough bread
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large (10-inch) saute pan until hot. Add the bread and cook over medium heat, tossing frequently, until the bread is evenly toasted and browned. Sprinkle with salt and pepper.

Day old French bread
Olive oil
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
  • Cut bread into cubes and place in a large bowl. Drizzle cubes with olive oil, salt, pepper and red pepper flakes. Mix well.
  • Spread seasoned bread onto a sheet pan and bake for about 15 minutes.

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  • Whisk the butter, olive oil, oregano and garlic salt. Toss with the bread cubes. Spread in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake until golden brown and toasted, 15 to 20 minutes.

2 tablespoons butter
Sourdough bread, crusts removed, cut into 24 cubes (1 inch each)
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper

Steps:

  • Heat butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add bread and cook, stirring, until golden brown and toasted; season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate to drain.

15 slices bread
1/4 cup butter, melted
2 teaspoons (optional) garlic salt

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Remove crusts from stale bread slices. Brush bread on both sides with melted butter. Cut bread slices up into small cubes. Sprinkle with garlic salt (if desired). Arrange cubes on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 15 minutes or until browned. Let cool. Store croutons in a covered container or plastic bag.
  • Serve in soups or salads.
