BBQ BAKED BEANS
BBQ baked beans are a summer staple. This shortcut version relies on ordinary canned baked beans, which we dress up with fresh peppers, onions, cider vinegar and barbecue sauce. The sweet and tangy side dish is perfect for a summer barbecue, picnic, potluck or weeknight dinner. The beans taste even better the next day, so they can be prepared ahead of time and reheated or served at room temperature.

Steps:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Heat an oven-proof heavy-bottom pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the bacon and cook, stirring often, until the fat has started to render and the bacon is beginning to crisp, about 5 minutes. Add the onions and bell pepper and continue to cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are slightly softened, about 3 minutes.
- Stir in the canned beans, barbecue sauce, molasses, vinegar, Worcestershire, brown sugar, mustard powder, cayenne, 1 teaspoon salt and several grinds of black pepper. Bring to a simmer and let cook over low heat, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened slightly, about 5 minutes.
- Transfer the pot to the oven and bake (uncovered) until the sauce thickens and the beans on top begin to brown, about 40 minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 15 minutes before serving warm or at room temperature.
5-BEAN BEAN BAKE
Five stars for this five bean bake. It's not all about the beans, though. Bacon and onion are added for savory flavor, and ketchup and brown sugar for some sweetness.

BAR-B-Q BAKED BEANS
I have been serving this recipe to my extended family every Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter for over 20 years. It is always a big hit but I have never told the children that there are lima beans in it! This is especially good with a baked ham or spareribs, and is easily doubled. Enjoy!

BBQ BEANS
This delicious recipe can be prepared stove top, in the oven, on a BBQ grill, in the crock pot, or over the lowest part of a campfire. The original recipe came from a Marlboro booklet called The Original Cook Like a Man Cookbook. It also called for 2 cups smoked ham, chopped, and was a one-pot meal for camping. We prefer it as a side dish without the ham, and make it on the stove or in the oven, too. My son is the one who introduced me to it. This recipe represents typical cowboy cuisine of the Southwestern U.S.

Steps:
- Cook and chop bacon.
- Combine all ingredients in a large Dutch oven (or crock pot if using that). Mix well.
- Simmer on the stove, over a camp fire, in the oven (at 350°F), in the crock pot, or on the grill (medium heat) until the vegetables are soft (at least an hour).
- You should stir often (unless you're cooking in the oven or crock pot), to prevent sticking on the bottom of the Dutch oven. Stir lightly, you don't want to mash the beans.

Steps:
- Adjust the oven rack to the lower-middle position and preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.
- Fry the regular chopped bacon in a large, deep skillet until the bacon has partially cooked and released about 1/4 cup drippings. Add the onions, peppers and jalapenos, and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Add the beans, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, mustard and chipotles, and bring to a simmer. (If the skillet is not large enough, add the beans and heat to a simmer and then transfer to a large bowl and stir in the remaining ingredients). Pour the flavored beans into an aluminum pan. Top with the uncooked slices of bacon (you can halve the slices if you like). Then bake until the beans are bubbly and the sauce is the consistency of pancake syrup, about 2 hours. Let stand to thicken slightly and serve.

BARBECUE BAKED BEANS
I've adapted this recipe from "The Barbecue Bible" by Steven Raichlin. If you like your barbecue beans on the sweet side, then these are the beans for you. I know that the list of ingredients is long, but most of them are probably already in your pantry. Don't be tempted to leave out the fresh garlic or fresh gingerroot--it makes a difference. This is mandatory with our ribs--all you need is a potato salad and coleslaw and you're all set.

- Heat a large (oven safe, if you don’t want to transfer) skillet over medium-low heat and add the bacon. Cook until it’s brown and crisp and most of the fat is rendered.
- Stit in the onion, pepper and garlic. Cook, stirring often, until everything softens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper. Cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in the vinegar, BBQ sauce, ketchup, mustard and brown sugar until combined.
- Stir in the baked beans directly from the can. Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat. I suggest tasting the beans here and adding more salt, pepper or heat if desired. If you'd like, you can lay a few strips of bacon on top of the beans here too!
THE 10 BEST AND WORST CANNED BAKED BEANS - EAT THIS NOT THAT
From eatthis.com
- Bush's Best Original Baked Beans. The clear winner. As one editor wrote, "These are classic for a reason! I love the pork bits and the sweet sauce. " Nearly every editor who participated described this can of beans as classic.
- Bush's Best Vegetarian Baked Beans. A perfect balance between sweet and savory with a nice thick sauce. Is it any surprise that one of Bush's Best baked beans takes second place?
- Amy's Organic Vegetarian Beans. This can of beans had a strong tomato taste, but it wasn't unpleasant like the can of Heinz baked beans. A majority preferred this can of beans over some of the others because it wasn't nearly as saucy.
- 365 Everyday Value Organic Baked Beans. The beans were soft, and the flavor wasn't overly sweet. 365 Everyday Value Organic Baked Beans was one of our favorites, likely because they weren't too sweet or too savory—they were just right in the middle.
- Campbell's Pork & Beans. Our taste-testers enjoyed the thick texture of these beans. Others said these beans had a smoky, salty taste with a pronounced pork flavor.
- Trader Joe's Baked Beans. The majority of us agreed that this can of beans was a bit too sweet, but the texture was spot-on. Another editor and I both ranked this can of beans high on our list of favorites.
- B&M Original Baked Beans. The texture of these beans was nearly identical to that of the vegetarian variety. However, the taste was slightly different. One of the editors commented that she tasted a hint of pork.
- B&M Vegetarian Baked Beans. While the texture of the beans was similar to what we would expect from a can of baked beans, the flavor of the aftertaste is what made all of our stomachs churn.
- Heinz Original Baked Beans. The best way to describe this can is navy beans floating in an abyss of Heinz ketchup. I personally was not a fan of this can of beans at all.
- Eden Organic Baked Beans—Sweet Sorghum. Imagine going to an Ethiopian restaurant and delving into a plate of soft (almost mushy) savory legumes and vegetables sitting atop a bed of spongy injera bread.
