You're going to love how easy this family-sized air fryer roast chicken is! It is covered in a dry spice rub and air fried to crispy, golden perfection. The meat is juicy and tender with perfect, extra crispy skin - every time! All you need is a few simple ingredients and about 5 minutes of prep for this healthy, easy weeknight roast that the whole family will enjoy.

2.8 kg whole chicken
3 tbsp olive oil
2-3 tsp paprika
2 tsp salt
pepper
1 lemon
1 bunch fresh thyme

Steps:

  • Pre-heat the air fryer to 180°C/356 F.
  • Pat the chicken dry with some paper towel. Then, rub the olive oil over the skin, along with the paprika, salt and pepper. Rub the spices over the entire chicken.
  • Prick the lemon with a fork and place it into the empty chicken cavity, along with the thyme.
  • Place the chicken into the air fryer tray, breast side down. Cook for around 60 minutes, before carefully turning the chicken so that the breast side is facing up.
  • Continue cooking for a further 15-20 minutes, until the chicken is completely cooked through (when a meat thermometer reaches 75 °C (167 F) at the thickest part of the chicken. Cooking times will vary slightly depending on the size of the chicken and brand/size of air fryer. See notes below.
  • Once cooked, place the chicken onto a board or plate to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving. Enjoy!

How to cook a whole chicken in an air fryer.

3lb whole chicken
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt (kosher or flaked)
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
(optional) seasoning rub

Steps:

  • Preheat air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Pat chicken dry. Drizzle with olive oil, and season with salt and pepper. Rub seasoning into the chicken including inside the cavity.
  • Place chicken in air fryer basket chicken breast side down [Note 1].
  • Turn the air fryer down to 360°F/ 180°C, and cook the chicken for 25 minutes.
  • When the time is up, carefully flip the chicken over and air fry for another 25-30 minutes until it is golden brown and at least 165°F/ 74°C in the center of the thickest part [Note 2].
  • Remove chicken from the air fryer to a plate or cutting board. Cover with foil and let it rest for at least 10 minutes before carving and serving.

I made this in my new air fryer, and I was very pleased how easily and fast it cooed. It's nice to not use the oven so you have space and time to use both at the same time.

Number Of Ingredients 7

4 lbs whole chickens
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1 lemon, halved
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil
2 teaspoons herbes de provence or 2 teaspoons other herbs like rosemary and thyme
3 garlic cloves, smashed

Steps:

  • Line the baking pan with aluminum foil.
  • Pat the chicken dry and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and lemon juice.
  • Put the lemon half into the chicken's cavity.
  • Put the chicken on the prepared baking tray and drizzle with olive oil.
  • Rub with herbs and garlic cloves.
  • Put the garlic cloves into the chicken's cavity with the lemon. Truss if desired.
  • Put the baking pan with the chicken in rack position 1.
  • Set to convection bake at 400 for 25 minutes.
  • When timer expired, reduced temperature to 350 degrees F and bake for an additional 20 minutes, or until golden and crispy and chicken thighs register 165 on an instant read thermometer.
  • Let chicken rest for 10 minutes. Carve and serve.

Use an air fryer to create this tempting dish of tender chicken breasts coated in garlic, sweet paprika and herbs. Mix up the spices for interest or keep it plain if you prefer

4 chicken breasts
½ tbsp rapeseed oil
1 tsp salt
1 ½ tsp garlic granules
1 tsp smoked sweet paprika
2 tsp mixed herbs
½ tsp pepper
steamed rice and greens such as broccoli or green beans or a green salad, to serve (optional)

Steps:

  • Coat the chicken in the oil and set aside. In a bowl, combine the salt, garlic, paprika and mixed herbs with a good grinding of black pepper, then scatter onto a plate.
  • Roll each oiled chicken breast in the seasoning and put in your air fryer basket. Cook at 180C for 18-20 mins, turning after 10 mins. To check it is cooked, pierce the chicken with a knife at the thickest part to see if the juices run clear. Or insert a temperature thermometer and it should read 70C. Serve with rice and greens or a salad.
