- Choose hand-held foods. Any food that can't be eaten with bare hands is out. Eating with utensils can be a nuisance; with grains of sand attaching themselves to your food and every surface available, sand and wind are a fork and plate's worst enemies, turning each bite of food into a gritty mess.
- Store foods in resealable plastic bags instead of containers. When left uncovered, containers of food are likely to be dusted with sand. Though resealing a plastic bag after each use will likely keep out more grains of sand, even left-opened foods are better protected from flying debris.
- Pack using a cooler or an insulated bag with an ice pack. Keeping foods chilled prevents them from going limp or wilting under the hot sun. Frozen juice boxes or water bottles work in lieu of ice packs.
- Pack wrapped foods. Not just edible wraps, which are great, but anything that is wrapped — by a peel or foil, for example — will help keep grains of sand from finding their way into each bite.
- Pack dry foods. Non-oily snack foods like pretzels and goldfish crackers both have dry surfaces that prevent sand from clinging. They also won't wilt or leave a greasy or juicy trail under the hot sun.
- Pack a roll of paper towels in a plastic grocery store bag. Paper napkins need to be held stationary, whereas a roll of paper towels will keep things organized.
- Line or separate wet and absorbent foods. When assembling sandwiches, pita pockets or wraps, spread a condiment on the bread and line it with dry lettuce leaves before layering on other ingredients — both will keep moisture from other ingredients from being absorbed into the bread.

- Beach Bag – I recommend one with various pockets so you can find your keys and phone when you need them without having to dump out the whole bag.
- Gallon size ziploc bags or plastic grocery bags – To protect your phones, keys and money from getting sandy and wet. Plus, they are great for putting wet swimsuits in on the way home.
- Sunscreen – And more sunscreen, and be sure to grab the SUNSCREEN! I always bring spray and face sticks, and don’t forget to reapply!
- Protective Clothing/Hat – Swim shirts or always a good idea when your skin needs a break from the sun. My husband won’t go to the beach without his. Hats protect your ears, face and eyes, be sure everyone has one!
- Shade – If you plan on being there all day, it doesn’t hurt to bring a small umbrella that you can stick in the sand or a beach tent. We actually sat in our beach tent one time when it started to rain and had our lunch until the rain blew over.
- Snacks – You and the kids are bound to get hungry at some point. I suggest healthy snacks like Concord Fresh Success freeze dried veggies, apples, sandwiches, trail mix, etc.

- Banana and Nutella Greek Yogurt Bark. When the 3 p.m. beach hunger strikes, you want a snack that will fill you up without bloating your beach bod. With this treat, you can have it all — sweetness from the bananas and Nutella, combined with the healthy properties of Greek yogurt.
- Margarita Ice Pops. Drinks on the beach are expensive, so why not BYOB with this boozy popsicle recipe? It might be summer, but with these pops, you’ll feel like it’s spring break forever.
- DIY Fruit-Infused Ice Pops. Keep your cool with these chilly treats. It’s easy to make pops in every flavor, from sangria to key lime.
- Infused Water. After a few hours in the sun, you definitely need to rehydrate. Why drink boring H2O when you can sip on these fruit-infused recipes? The bonus?
- Orange Peel Jell-O Shots. It might be too early in the day for real shots, but still say cheers to summer with this daytime fruity shooter. Feel like getting creative?
- Chocolate-Covered Frozen Bananas. There’s always money in the banana stand. These are basically popsicles, but a whole lot healthier. Try out this natural dessert, and you’ll never go back to its sugar-filled sister.
- Cayenne Spiced Chocolate-Covered Frozen Berries. When the beach haze starts to set in, wake yourself up this sweet snack’s unexpected kick. The cayenne and chocolate work together perfectly to create a treat that has just enough bite.
- Mimosa Smoothies. Your favorite cocktail isn’t just for Sunday brunch anymore — make it beachworthy by blending it with frozen fruit instead of ice (add pineapple to make it #tropical).
- Krabby Patty. Inevitably, at some point you’re going to want some real food during your beach day. Whether it’s the Fourth of July or a random day in August, you can’t go wrong with a classic cheeseburger.
- Cookie Butter-Covered Frozen Candy Bar. You’ll need something sweet to complement the savoriness of that burger, so make this dessert by drizzling some cookie butter over frozen pieces of your favorite candy bar.

- Dried fruit. Dried fruit is great for a day at the beach because it doesn’t spoil as quickly as some fresh fruits. Can you imagine trying to eat an apple or banana that has been sitting in a hot bag all day?
- Frozen cherries. Living Swell creator and health expert, Peggy Hall, suggests bringing a plastic baggie full of frozen cherries with you, as an alternative to ice pops and other not-so-healthy frozen treats.
- Trail mix. Trail mix is perfect when performing any sort of physical activity because it’s full of so many energy-dense ingredients such as nuts and raisins.
- Kale chips. Kale has grown in popularity recently, which lead a lot of us to discover the countless ways to incorporate it into our diets. One way to eat kale is to turn it into chips.
- Raw vegetables. Raw veggies have the reputation of being unexciting to eat, but the great thing about them is that they require no preparation, and they’re packed with nutrients and antioxidants, like fiber, Vitamin A and Vitamin C, that help boost our immunity.
- Homemade minty lime-ade. This drink, which was provided to us courtesy of Hall, is pretty much a mojito without the added calories that come from alcohol.
- Citrus fruits. Fruits like oranges, grapefruits and tangerines contain phytochemicals that help you stay safe in the sun. We’re not saying that you should skip putting on the sunscreen, but the phytochemicals, which are just nutrients found in most plants, can help to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
