10 THINGS NOBODY TELLS YOU ABOUT BAMBOO - GARDENISTA

- Bamboo can be a clumper or a runner. At Bamboo Sourcery, a sustainable, family-run bamboo nursery in Sebastopol, CA, Cristie Kiley tells me the most common misconception about bamboo is that people think all bamboo runs.
- Bamboo is a grass, not a tree. Despite countless images in books and on social media of dense, towering, tree-like bamboo groves, bamboo is actually in the grass family of Poaceae, and—not surprisingly—is the biggest in the family.
- Bamboo grows lightning fast. Ever wondered what the fastest growing plant is? You guessed it: bamboo. Some tropical species’ new shoots can grow an impressive 4 feet in one day, but it does reach maximum size within 5 to 15 years.
- Bamboo is Superman-strong. Try to break a large bamboo cane in two, and it is impossible. In fact, bamboo’s tensile strength is stronger than steel: 28,000 per square inch versus 23,000 for steel.
- Bamboo helps Mother Earth. Did you know that bamboo produces 35% more oxygen than trees, plus it consumes more carbon dioxide than any other plant? This means this grass helps reverse the effects of global warming by swallowing up greenhouse gasses.
- Bamboo is not a fire risk if well-maintained. With fires being a devastatingly ever-growing problem these days, there has been much talk about whether bamboo is flammable or not.
- Bamboo cleans up. Bamboo is extremely good at removing metals and other toxic substances from water and soil. This method of using plants as an organic factor to eliminate pollutants is called phytoremediation.
- Bamboo is food. Of course we know that bamboo shoots and leaves are the favorite food of giant panda bears, but the shoots have been eaten throughout Asia for centuries and used in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
- Bamboo can be cold-hardy. Despite their love of warmth and sun, some bamboo varieties can tolerate freezing winter temperatures while still adding a tropical touch.
- Bamboo is versatile. There are over 1,500 species of bamboo to choose from, and this plant fits perfectly into most gardens styles from tropical to modern.

- Chinese dwarf A lush and bushy bamboo, Chinese dwarf (Bambusa guangxiensis) is a beautiful compact plant, which makes an excellent small privacy screen, pot plant or feature in a garden bed.
- Slender weavers One of the most popular bamboos, slender weavers (Bambusa textilis var. gracilis) has thin, tall and straight culms that form an attractive clump.
- Timor black Everyone’s favourite black clumping species, Timor black (Bambusa lako) forms a striking screen of glossy black culms and light green foliage, and is a great substitute for the running form (Phyllostachys nigra).
- Giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus) are only suitable for large gardens due to their extraordinary ability to shoot up. However that does mean they are a fabulous choice for adding privacy - even to passing drones!
- Dwarf green stripe (Pleioblastus sp.) is an excellent edging plant. What it lacks in stature it makes up for in impact - its striped yellow and green leaves making for a lush groundcover.
- Pleioblastus ‘Tsuboi’ is a highly ornamental bamboo and also a runner. It is best grown in a pot or planter bed lined with a root barrier.
- Goldstripe Proudly wearing its green and gold stripes, Bambusa ‘Goldstripe’ is the perfect clumping bamboo if you need a compact, upright screen. It can be grown in very narrow beds of only 40cm wide, but ideally prefers to be planted in a bed at least 1m wide.
- China gold An exquisite-looking bamboo, China gold (Bambusa eutuldoides var. viridi vittata) has bright lemon-yellow culms with green striations. The upright culms are heavily branched, making it a great screening bamboo.
- Bambusa ‘Fernleaf’ features soft green foliage that emerges from tightly packed culms – great for a small hedge or screen.
