7 WAYS TO STOP YOUR ROOSTER FROM CROWING CONSTANTLY

- Surgical Alterations. I’m putting this at the top of the list so we can get it out of the way. Some people, not mentioning names, have taken their rooster’s vocal problem to the extreme by enlisting veterinarians to perform surgery which stop a rooster crowing.
- Rooster Collars. A rooster collar doesn’t necessarily stop your rooster from crowing, but it does make it more difficult for him to do so—at the volume he probably prefers, at least.
- Meeting His Needs. Like most barnyard animals, if roosters are unhappy, they have something to say about it. Crowing is often a rooster’s way of crying out and demanding better treatment (or food and water, for example).
- Find Out What’s Bugging Him. Speaking of meeting his needs, sometimes roosters crow for reasons other than showing off to the girls. He may see something you’re not seeing…like a predator.
- Give Him Something Else To Do. If chickens are kept in small spaces, they may become bored. And a bored chicken can be destructive and noisy. Consider giving your roo some elbow room or something to do if he’s on his own a lot.
- Trim the Flock. Roosters crow to show other roosters who is in charge. So if you have not one rooster, but two, three, or even four, the competition for hens is pretty fierce.
- Black Out Dates. Roosters are stimulated by light, and when they see any type of light emerging, their natural instincts will prompt them to crow. If you can limit your chatty roos exposure to light, you can prevent excessive crowing.

- Hens. Most backyard breeders keep chickens purely for eggs, and if this is the case in your situation, you may be happy to know that you don’t need a rooster for egg production — problem solved!
- Reduce the competition. A large part of why roosters crow is to show other roosters who’s in charge. Usually, you want to have around 10 hens per rooster.
- Confuse him. This is a common trick among backyard breeders, and it has proved successful for many. Your rooster has a natural internal clock and will usually crow when the sun begins to creep up.
- Entertain him. Contrary to popular belief, roosters are highly intelligent animals that are keenly aware of their surroundings. It may just be that your rooster is bored and needs a change of scenery.
- There may actually be a reason. Because a crowing rooster can become so annoying, we often default to irritation and simply assume that our rooster is crowing purely to annoy us.
- Keep him alone. Another reason that roosters crow throughout the day is to keep in touch with their flock, calling them for food or warning them of danger (or just to say hi).
- Use a rooster collar. A rooster collar may be an option if nothing else is working for you. Bear in mind that these collars will not stop a rooster from crowing completely, but it does make it more difficult for him and may help him crow less.
- Try surgery. We don’t recommend this method or feel that it is particularly humane, but it is an option. There is a surgery that a vet can perform that will reduce your rooster’s crowing to whisper.
