FRENCH TOASTED BUNS
"Being a frugal mom, I feed my family creative foods on a budget," writes Sharon Strouse from Millersburg, Ohio. "This is favorite of our four children and a great way to use up left-over hamburger buns. It's also a big hit when we're camping."

HOW TO TOAST BUNS

Steps:
- Set your oven or toaster oven to BROIL and let it heat up for 5-10 minutes. Turn the dial on your regular oven or toaster oven to its broil setting. Use its highest broil setting if it has different ones. Let it preheat for 5-10 minutes so it is ready to toast your buns. If you are using a regular oven, make sure there is an oven rack in the top position right under the broiler. If you are using a toaster oven that has multiple rack positions, you can put the rack in the top position to get the buns closer to the broiler as well.
- Place the buns cut-side-up on a baking sheet. Cut or pull the buns apart to expose the inside for toasting. Set the halves of the buns face-up on a baking sheet so the cut side will get toasted.Tip: For an easy flavor boost, spread about 1 tbsp (14.2 g) of butter or 1 tbsp (15 mL) of olive oil on each bun before you place them under the broiler. If you have to cut the buns in half, then try to make the 2 halves as even as possible so they toast evenly. If the buns are supposed to be attached, such as hotdog or sub buns, you can just spread them apart as much as you can without pulling the halves off of one another.
- Broil the buns for 30 seconds or until they turn golden brown. Put the baking sheet in the oven or toaster oven and close the door. Keep an eye on the buns and remove them after 30 seconds or when you see that they start to turn a golden brown color. It's easy to go from toasted to burnt with a broiler, so it's important to stay and watch the buns as they toast.

TOASTED BURGER BUNS

Steps:
- I think the taste and the texture of buns are best when lightly toasted. To toast a bun on a grill, grill pan, or griddle, split the bun open, place it cut side down on the grill, and grill until light golden brown, about 10 seconds. Alternatively, you can place the split bun halves cut side up on a baking sheet and cook them under a preheated broiler until light golden brown, about 30 seconds. Keep a close eye on them and don't let them get too brown or else that texture will take on a life of its own and defeat the purpose of starting with a soft bun.

Steps:
- Preheat an air fryer to 375 degrees F.
- Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions. Roll each into a loose ball, then press them flat until they are each just wider than the slider buns (they should be about 1/2 inch thick). Make a small indent in the center of each patty. Season the patties generously with salt and pepper.
- Place the patties in a single layer of an air fryer basket. Close the fryer and cook until the patties are browned and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the center of the patties registers 150 degrees F, 5 to 7 minutes.
- Place a slice of cheese and a slice of bacon on each patty and cook until the cheese is melted and the patties are cooked to the desired doneness, about 1 minute.
- Carefully remove the patties from the air fryer and place on the bottoms of the slider buns. Top each patty with lettuce, tomato, onion and 1 tablespoon each barbecue sauce, ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard. Cover with the top buns and serve.

- Flip the burgers and cook for an additional 3 to 5 minutes or until an instant read thermometer inserted horizontally into the burger patties registers 155°F. After removing the patties from the air fryer, their temperature will rise 5°F to a safe eating temperature of 160°F.

- Start by making the hamburger mix. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef with the garlic, onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Just fold in the other ingredients in the ground beef and make sure not to over mix the mixture.
- Using your hands, quickly shape the hamburger patties and place on a tray. You want to make sure that the meat stays cold, because if you overwork the meat then the temperature of your hands will warm the meat up and that can result in really dense hamburgers. To shape the burgers, it's also a good idea to wet your hands a little as this will prevent the meat from sticking to your hands.
- Lightly spray the air fryer basket with non-stick spray, and place your hamburger patties in the basket and cook to your desired doneness.

- Combine the ground beef, garlic powder, salt and pepper in a bowl. Mix it all together with your hands. Break the meat into 2 balls. Form uniformly flat patties that don’t bulge in the middle.
- Set the air fryer to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C) for 4 minutes. When ready, spray the basket lightly with oil. Set the patties in the basket. Cook for 8-12 minutes (times will vary based on your air fryer and desired degree of doneness. I find that 8 minutes is perfect for a medium-rare burger. Halfway through, baste the burger with butter, then flip it over and baste the other side. Finish cooking.
- Butter the buns and lightly toast them on the stovetop, or in the air fryer after the patties are done cooking.

- Before cooking hamburger patties, if you'd like to toast the hamburger buns, simply spread each half lightly with softened butter. Cook on low heat (butter side down) in a large skillet until golden brown. Set aside.
- Season hamburger patties by lightly brushing each on one side with melted butter and a tiny bit of liquid smoke flavoring. Lightly sprinkle patties with salt and Montreal steak seasoning. You can substitute your favorite seasonings, if desired, to suit your personal taste. Have cheese slices AND precooked bacon nearby. You will quickly add these at the end of the air frying time, so you'll need them close.
- Preheat air fryer to 360°F. This takes 3-4 minutes. Place patties in air fryer basket, seasoned side down. Cook for 5 minutes, then turn patties over, and continue cooking for 2 more minutes. NOTE: Because air fryer temps vary quite a bit, your cooking time may be a bit less or a bit longer. Once done, TURN OFF THE AIR FRYER! Immediately place a slice of cheese onto each burger patty. Lay bacon strips on top of the cheese (2 halves per burger). Close the air fryer and let the patties sit in the hot (but powered off) air fryer. After 2 minutes, remove the patties from the air fryer. The residual heat will have melted the cheese and heated the bacon.
- Place burger patties onto prepared buns, and garnish with your preferred condiments and toppings. Serve, and enjoy!
