This recipe is from Rachel, my MIL. She notes that she got the recipe from Southern Living magazine and that the name of this dessert is derived from its popularity---everyone called for the recipe.

Ingredients

1 cup dates, chopped
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 cup chocolate chips

Steps:

Place the dates and baking soda in a small bowl and pour the boiling water over them. Mix and cover.
Cream the sugar and shortening. Add the eggs, vanilla, salt, and cocoa. Combine with the date mixture.
Add the all-purpose flour and whole wheat flour in small amounts with the above mixture and beat well.
Spread in a greased 9 X 13 pan and sprinkle chocolate chips on top.
Bake at 350* for 30-35 minutes. Cool and cut into bars or squares.
