Steps:
- Heat the oil in a frying pan, preferably non-stick. Add the chicken and fry without moving it until it takes on a bit of colour. Turn the chicken and cook on the other side. Continue cooking for 12-15 mins until the chicken is cooked through. Season all over with a little salt and pepper.
- Halve the tomatoes and throw them into the pan, stirring them around for a couple of minutes until they start to soften. Reduce the heat and stir in the pesto and crème fraîche until it makes a sauce. Scatter with a few basil leaves if you have them, then serve with rice and salad or mash and broccoli.

- Don’t Let the Chicken’s Water Freeze. This is possibly the most important tip on the list. Whatever you do, don’t let your chickens’ water freeze. If your chickens don’t have access to fresh water, they cannot properly digest their food, they can’t regulate their body temperature properly, and egg production will drop.
- Give Your Chickens Extra (HEALTHY) Food/Treats In Winter. Yes, I said give your chickens extra food – but don’t go crazy. Avoid high-fat, high-energy treats like fat balls.
- Use Dropping Boards. Yep. Delightful boards of poop. Chicken waste is mostly water. 85 percent liquid, in fact, so leaving a lot of poop in the chicken coop significantly increases the amount of moisture, which in turn puts your chickens at risk of all kinds of problems – including respiratory infections, diseases from the presence of mold and fungus, and frostbite.
- Use Sand for Chicken Litter. Remember: In winter, moisture is the enemy. Using sand as chicken litter is one of the best winter chicken care tips you can make use of.
- Check for Condensation on the Coop Windows. Moisture. If you add excessive moisture in the coop to the cold temperatures of winter, your chickens can end up with frostbite and respiratory infections.
- Provide Proper Ventilation. Your chickens need fresh air inside the coop and moisture and ammonia have to escape – otherwise you’re putting the health of your flock at serious risk.
- Insulate the Chicken Coop to Effectively Winterize It. Now you’ve got the coop nicely ventilated at the top, it’s time to insulate the rest. You need to winterize your chicken coop effectively, and insulating it is an essential part of that process.
- Install Flat Roosting Poles to Avoid Frostbite on Chicken Feet. A common winter chicken care problem is feet. Chickens can get frostbitten feet, and it’s painful and unpleasant, and can lead to other problems.
- Insulate Your Egg Boxes. Even if you don’t have the coldest winters, it’s a good idea to at least put an extra deep layer of straw in your egg boxes. If winters are particularly cold, seriously consider putting your egg boxes on the inside of the coop – perhaps underneath the droppings boards under the roosts.
- Cover Run Floors With Sand. Sand has excellent insulating properties, so in really cold weather, or in wet weather, covering the floor of the run with a generous layer of sand helps to stave off frostbitten feet, prevents too much moisture, and keeps your flock warmer.
TOP 10 TIPS FOR KEEPING CHICKENS IN WINTER - THE SPRUCE
From thespruce.com
Occupation WriterPublished 2011-12-01Author Lauren Arcuri
- Chickens Don't Need a Heater. Don't put a heater in your chicken coop for winter warmth. Think of all that bedding—you're asking for a fire. Plus, chickens don't need it.
- Use Deep Litter to Keep Them Warm. The deep litter method is a way of allowing bedding material and chicken poop to build up in the coop over the spring, summer, and fall so that by winter you have roughly a foot of composting material on the floor of the coop.
- They May Not Lay Unless You Supplement Light. Some birds are great layers right through the winter. Buff Orpingtons seem to lay no matter how short the days.
- Feed Them Corn in the Evening to Keep Them Warm All Night. Giving your chickens a nice feeding of cracked corn before bed gives them something to digest during the night, keeping them warmer.
- Hang a Head of Cabbage for a Chicken Play Toy. Just like humans, chickens can get a little bored and stir-crazy in the winter. They sure seem to enjoy a head of cabbage on a string in the coop.
- Make Them a Nice Sunroom. If you’re worried about your girls not having enough space in the coop, you can build a kind of cold frame or greenhouse-style addition to your structure, covering it in clear plastic.
- Petroleum Jelly on Combs and Wattles Protects from Frostbite. In the coldest winter climates, you may find that breeds with large combs and wattles are prone to frostbite.
- Chickens Don't Like Snow. Generally speaking, once temperatures are in the 20 degrees Fahrenheit range, chickens won’t walk out into the snow. You can scatter hay or straw on the ground and this will make it more palatable for them.
- Chickens Don’t Have to Be Put Inside in Bad Weather. If chickens don’t want to be outdoors, they'll head into the coop. Just let them do what they want. They're hardier than you might think and aren’t as averse to cold as people often assume.
- Roosts Are Key. Chickens will roost together and fluff themselves out. This is what keeps them warm. It also keeps them off the cold ground—roost should be raised at least 2 or 3 feet above the earth.

6 WINTER TREATS FOR YOUR CHICKENS - HOBBY FARMS
From hobbyfarms.com

- Scratch. Scratch, a blended mix of cracked corn and other whole grains, is the quintessential winter chicken treat. The energy required to digest the scratch grains increases the bird’s body heat, helping to keep it warmer just when needed it most.
- Greens. It’s no mystery that greens and fresh vegetables are in rather short supply in most locales during the winter months. Without grass, weeds and other greens to forage, egg yolks begin to pale and chickens lose their pizazz.
- Mealworms and Other Protein. The process of molting—losing and growing new feathers—often accompanies fall and winter weather. It’s an unavoidable part of being a chicken, and both the chickens and their keepers experience the repercussions of molting.
- Toasty, Tasty Treats. For most of us, winter weather ushers in some serious need for warm comfort foods. Am I about to endorse spoiling your flock with extra-special, winter-only homemade treats?
- Cultured Yogurt. Whether you’re a human or chicken, few things are as important as gut health. Especially in the winter, when slim forage, cold temperatures and molting stress can tax a flock’s collective immune system, boosting their gut flora will work wonders in increasing their overall health and reducing their susceptibility to mites, lice and parasites.
- Boredom Busters. In the winter, something scrumptious that satisfies boredom as well as hunger is always a winner. With fewer bugs to feast on, less in the way of greenery and snowy days that leave a flock cooped up, winter boredom isn’t just a frustration: It can cause behavioral problems ranging from mild pecking to fatal cannibalism.
