SUGAR COOKIE STARS

Sugar Cookie Stars image

Make these star-shaped sugar cookies shine with royal icing and sanding sugar. They're perfect for a cookie decorating party with your kids.

Categories     Christmas     dessert

Time 2h

Yield 36 servings

Number Of Ingredients 14

2/3 c. vegetable shortening
3/4 c. granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. grated orange zest
1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 large egg
4 tsp. milk
2 c. all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. kosher salt
1 large egg yolk
1 tsp. water
2 to 3 drops red food coloring
Royal icing, for decorating
Sanding sugar, for decorating

Steps:

  • For the cookies: Beat the shortening, granulated sugar, orange zest and vanilla in a large bowl with a mixer on medium speed until thoroughly combined, 2 to 3 minutes. Beat in the egg until light and fluffy, then beat in the milk.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a medium bowl. With the mixer on low speed, beat the flour mixture into the butter mixture until just combined. Divide the dough in half; flatten each half between 2 sheets of parchment or wax paper, wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or freeze for 20 minutes.
  • For the glaze: Whisk the egg yolk, water and food coloring in a small bowl until well combined.
  • Preheat the oven to 375 ̊. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out 1 piece of dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into stars or other shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Arrange the cookies about 2 inches apart on the prepared pans. Brush the tops with the egg yolk glaze.
  • Bake the cookies until set but not browned, about 6 minutes. Let cool 3 minutes on the pan, then remove to racks to cool completely. Decorate with royal icing and sanding sugar. Let set about 1 hour.

STAR CONFETTI COOKIES

Star Confetti Cookies image

These simple sugar cookies hold their shape when baked, so your cut-outs will have nice, clean edges. Mixed with red, white and blue confetti stars, they're a festive treat for a patriotic celebration.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     dessert

Time 4h55m

Yield about 56 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting (see Cook's Note)
1/8 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon fine salt
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1 large egg
1 1/2 sticks (12 tablespoons) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup red, white and blue edible confetti stars, plus more for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Whisk the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Mix the vanilla and egg with a fork in a small bowl.
  • Beat the butter, granulated sugar and confectioners' sugar together in the bowl of a stand mixer on low speed until the butter has picked up the sugars, about 30 seconds. (If using a hand mixer, beat about 2 minutes.) Increase the speed to medium and beat until slightly creamy, stopping halfway to scrape the bowl, about 1 minute (about 3 minutes with a hand mixer).
  • Reduce the speed to low, slowly add in the egg mixture and beat until combined. Add the flour mixture a heaping cup at a time in 2 additions, stopping a few times to scrape the bowl and beaters. (If using a hand mixer, increase the speed as the dough gets thicker to keep the beaters spinning.) Once all the flour is just incorporated, add the confetti stars, increase the speed to medium (higher with a hand mixer) and beat until the dough is very smooth, about 2 minutes (about 5 minutes with a hand mixer).
  • Turn the dough out of the bowl and bring it together. Divide the dough into 2 even pieces, each about 11 ounces. Shape each piece into a 6-inch square and wrap in plastic wrap. Refrigerate the dough for at least 3 hours or overnight.
  • Position the oven racks in the upper and lower thirds of the oven and preheat to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment. Take the dough pieces out of the refrigerator and let soften until just pliable but still cool and firm, about 15 minutes.
  • Dust a piece of parchment with flour. Working quickly, dust one square of the dough with flour and roll it to about 1/4 inch thick. Lift the dough occasionally by sliding a metal spatula or bench scraper underneath to make sure it isn't sticking to the parchment. Cut out 3 1/2-inch star cookies as close together as possible. Cut out the centers of the stars with a 1 1/2-inch cutter. If the dough becomes too soft to cut out, place it in the freezer for 5 minutes to firm back up. Transfer the large and small stars to separate prepared baking sheets, large on one and small on the other, leaving 1 inch between them all. Gather together the scraps and repeat with the remaining dough. When the remaining dough is too small for the large cutter, just cut out small stars. Sprinkle more confetti stars over the top of the cookies and gently press down so they stick. Freeze the cookies on the baking sheets while you repeat with the second dough piece. Freeze the cookies about 10 minutes before baking.
  • Bake, rotating the baking sheets from front to back and top to bottom halfway through, until the cookies are light golden brown around the edges and slightly firm when gently pressed, 18 to 20 minutes. Let cool completely on the baking sheets on a cooling rack, about 30 minutes.

SUGAR COOKIES

Sugar Cookies image

This sugar cookie dates back to a Swedish woman born in 1877! Her daughter, Esther Davis, shared the recipe with me and she came up with all the exact measurements, since the original cookies were mixed by feel and taste. These are my favorite cookies and I hope they'll become yours as well. -Helen Wallis, Vancouver, Washington

Time 3h30m

Yield Makes 32

Number Of Ingredients 10

3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
Salt
2 sticks unsalted butter, room temperature
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted
2 pasteurized egg whites
Edible silver dust, for sifting

Steps:

  • Make the cookies: Sift flour, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt into a large bowl.
  • Beat butter and granulated sugar with a mixer on medium-high speed until pale and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in egg.
  • Reduce speed to low. Add flour mixture, then vanilla. Refrigerate dough, wrapped in plastic wrap, for at least 1 hour.

0.5 tsp salt
2.75 cup all-purpose flour
1 package Dr. Oetker Vanilla Sugar sprinkled on top

SHINING STAR COOKIES

Shining Star Cookies image

This recipe is from "The Little Book of Christmas Cooking". It is full of these great little recipes designed for kids to do with adults, with easy step by step instructions. - After the cookies are done, you can thread a ribbon through the small holes and hang them on the Christmas tree. But please don't eat them if you put them on the tree. - You will also need a large star-shaped cookie cutter, a fat drinking straw, a small round cookie cutter (slightly larger than the candy you are using), parchment paper, and a large baking sheets.

Provided by LilPinkieJ

Categories     Candy

Time 32m

Yield 4 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup butter
1 small egg
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons allspice
4 dozen small hard candies (Unwrapped)

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  • Put the sugar and butter into a large bowl. Stir them together with a wooden spoon, until the mixture is smooth.
  • Break the egg into to a separate bowl. Use a fork to stir the egg hard, until the yolk and the white are mixed together well. Mix the beaten egg into the mixture in the bowl, a little at a time.
  • Sift the flour and allspice through a sieve into the bowl. Mix everything together really well, using the wooden spoon.
  • Use your hands to squeeze the mixture together to make a dough. Then, squeeze the dough into a large ball.
  • Dust a clean work surface and rolling pin with a little flour. Don't use too much flour or the dough will get tough. Roll out the ball of dough until it is about 1/4 inch thick.
  • Draw around a cookie sheet on parchment paper. Cut out the shape and put it on the baking sheet. Cut the stars from the dough using the large star cookie cutter. Place the stars on the parchment sheet.
  • Make a hole in each star by pressing the drinking straw through the dough, near to the top of one of the points.
  • use the small cookie cutter to cut a hole in the middle of each star. The hole should be only slightly bigger than the candy.
  • Squeeze the scraps of dough into a ball. Roll out the dough again and cut out the rest of the stars. Place them on the parchment sheet and make holes and circles in them too.
  • Put a candy into the middle of each star. It looks better if you use different colored hard candies. Put the cookie sheet on the middle shelf of the oven and bake the stars at 350°F for 12 minutes.
  • Take the cookies out of the oven. Leave them on the baking sheets until they have cooled completely. Remove carefully. This is where you can eat them, or make them into ornaments by stringing a ribbon through each hole at the tip of the stars.
