STATE FAIR DEEP FRIED CANDY BARS

State Fair Deep Fried Candy Bars image

This is a recipe post more for laughs and shock value than to really home-make. It's definitely not healthy! But you recreate the deep-fried magic of state/county fairs and trips to Seaside right in your own kitchen! And it's not so horrible on the cholesterol level if you share it and only have maybe once a year ;) This is enough batter to coat two candy bars, maybe a third one. Milky Ways are the best for this but Snickers, Mars Bars, and 3 Musketeers also work-- pretty much anything with a gooey center that you can poke a skewer through, hard chocolate won't work.

Time 10m

Yield 2 fried candy bars, 2 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 (12 ounce) chocolate candy bars (see description for suggestions)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
1 pinch baking soda (about 1/8 tsp)
1 cup milk (this is approximate, see instructions)
canola oil or vegetable oil, for frying

Steps:

  • Chill the candy by keeping it in the fridge but don't freeze it or else this recipe won't work.
  • Sift the dry ingredients together in a bowl. Pour in milk until it's a rich, creamy consistency, this is give or take 1 cup.
  • Fully coat the candy in the batter.
  • DEEP FRYER METHOD.
  • Using a strong wooden skewer (metal will burn your hands severely), pierce it through the bottom and lower it into an oil-filled deep fryer and remove when golden brown, about 3-5 minutes.
  • PAN FRY METHOD.
  • Heat 1-2" of oil in a frying pan. Drop the battered candy bar into the oil and fry on all sides, turning with a spatula or slotted spoon. Remove when golden brown, about 5-8 minutes.
  • They are awesome when chopped into bits and served with ice cream!

DEEP FRIED CANDY BARS

Deep Fried Candy Bars image

A Scotland favorite. Deep-fried candy bars such as Milky Way®, Snickers®, Mars® Bars, etc. We like Snickers® the best. A real treat! This recipe is my own variation. Enjoy!

Time 15m

Yield 2

Number Of Ingredients 6

2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup corn flour
⅛ teaspoon baking soda
2 cups milk, or as needed
1 cup vegetable oil for frying
2 chilled full-size chocolate-covered, nougat-filled candy bars (such as Snickers®)

Steps:

  • Mix all-purpose flour, corn flour, and baking soda in a shallow bowl. Stir enough milk into the flour mixture to make a somewhat-thin batter that will stick to the candy bars, but not drip off.
  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or deep skillet to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Dip the candy bars in the batter to coat.
  • Carefully put coated candy bar into hot oil and fry until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes.

  • Lay an egg roll wrapper in front of you on the cupboard in a diamond shape. Place a candy bar toward the bottom of the wrapper, as shown in the photo above. Fold the bottom part over the candy bar, and start roll up, folding in the sides as you get to them. Seal the seam with a bit of water.
  • Heat cooking oil in a skillet or frying pan - just enough to coat the entire bottom. Turn up the heat to medium-high. The oil is hot enough when the wrapper sizzles when dipped in the oil.
  • Fry the wrapped candy bars on each side until golden brown. Hold the candy bar with tongs to fry the edges. Let cool momentarily and eat while warm, coated with powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate sauce, if desired.

  • Funnel Cakes. Aside from maybe candy and caramel apples, funnel cakes are pretty much the go-to fair food. Everyone loves them, and they’re one of most fairs’ best-selling food items.
  • Corn Dogs. Corn dogs are another fair favorite because they just taste better at the fair. Want to save this recipe? Enter your email below and we'll send the recipe straight to your inbox!
  • Cotton Candy Ice Cream. Fairs are known for mixing strange ingredients into one cohesive dish, just like they did with cotton candy ice cream. It’s gorgeous, multi-colored, and smooth, and with this recipe, you can make it yourself in 10 minutes with no ice cream maker needed.
  • Churros. Whether you’re eating them at your local fair or at Disney World (which is just one massive, overly extravagant fair), churros are always a tasty treat.
  • Deep-Fried Oreos. As if Oreos weren’t already good enough, someone decided to deep-fry them. I don’t know who that person is, but I love them with all of my heart.
  • Deep-Fried Mars Bars. Oreos aren’t the only thing you can deep-fry. Check out this recipe for deep-fried Mars (or Milky Way) bars, as well. They have the same incredible pancake-like batter on the outside.
  • Lemonade. State fair lemonade is the best lemonade you’ll ever taste, and it’s all about getting the measurements right. You’ll need one cup of lemon juice, a half cup of water, one cup of ice, and a fourth cup of sugar.
  • Mini-Donuts. Mini-donuts are just like regular donuts; only they’re cuter and smaller, which means you can eat more of them without feeling guilty! (That’s how that works, right?)
  • Whoopie Pie. A whoopie pie is like an oversized, lighter, and fluffier Ding Dong. It has two soft, round chocolate cookies with a rich, creamy filling.
  • Elephant Ears. Depending on where you live, elephant ears may not be as common at your local fair. However, once you try them, you’ll love them. They’re a lot like funnel cakes – crispy pieces of fried, yeasty dough covered in powdered sugar and cinnamon.
