Every good cook needs a simple sugar cookie recipe. I love this one! It can be made up to 3 days ahead and chilled, cuts well, and stays soft...sour cream is the secret. This cream cheese frosting is my favorite and perfect with these cookies. Enjoy!

1 cup sour cream
2 cups sugar
1 cup unsalted butter
4 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
6 cups all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter (room temperature)
8 ounces cream cheese (softened)
1 teaspoon vanilla
3 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

Steps:

  • In a large bowl or stand mixer, combine the sour cream, sugar, butter, eggs, and vanilla or almond. Beat for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix just until combined. Dough will be thick and sticky. Divide dough in half and place each half on a large piece of plastic wrap. Press and flatten the dough into a disc, then wrap and cover it with the plastic wrap. Another option is to place the dough between two pieces of parchment or waxed paper, then roll dough out to ¼-inch thick while between the paper. Place dough in the refrigerator to chill for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat oven to 350° F. Line cookie sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mat.
  • If not rolled out already, flour the working surface and rolling pin. Roll dough to ¼ inch thick and use cookie cutters to cut out desired shapes. Carefully place cut-out cookie dough on prepared cookie sheets. Repeat with the dough scraps, until dough is used up. Keep other half of dough chilled until ready to use. Be careful not to over-flour, especially as you are rolling out the scraps. The less flour you use, the softer the cookies will be.
  • Bake one cookie sheet at a time for 8-10 minutes. Edges will be set and middle of cookies will look uniform and set as well, but still be light in color. Let cool on the pan.

I could not find this recipe from a friend's mother, but googled and here it is. She would always send home with me a little goodie tray with an assortment of cookies at Christmas. She would sprinkle just sugar or different colored sugar crytals on top of some of these and use the icing for the rest. I hope you all enjoy making...

1/2 c butter softened
1 c sugar
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
dash(es) salt
1/2 c sour cream
1 egg
1 tsp orange peel, finely shredded
1 tsp lemon extract
2 1/2 c all purpose flour

Steps:

  • 1. In mixing bowl, beat butter for 30 seconds using electric mixer. Add sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt, beat well. Beat in sour cream, egg, orange peel and lemon extract.
  • 2. Beat in as much flour as you can with mixer, using wooden spoon stir in remaining flour. Divide in half and cover, chill 1 to 2 hours or until easy to handle.
  • 3. On a well floured surface, roll out half of the dough at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Using a cookie cutter, cut dough into desired shapes. Place cookies 1 inch apart on a ungreased cookie sheet.
  • 4. Bake at 375 degree for 6 to 7 minutes or until edges are firm and bottoms are light brown. Transfer to wire rack, cool.
  • 5. Prepare Powdered Icing or frosting, spread the mixture over cookies, immediately top each cookie with candied orange peel.
  • 6. Powdered Sugar Icing: In a medium mixing bowl, beat together 4 Cup sifted powdered sugar and 1/4 Cup milk. Stir in additional milk if needed, 1 tsp at a time, until glaze is easy to spread. Tint with food coloring if you like.

Steps:

  • Dissolve baking soda and salt in Sour cream.
  • Mix butter and sugar.
  • Add eggs and vanilla.
  • Mix in Sour cream mixture.
  • Slowly add flour, and mix well.
  • Chill for at least one hour.
  • Roll out and cut with your favorite shapes (Be sure not to roll too thin).
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
  • Let cookies cool, and decorate with your favorite Icing(I prefer Royal Icing).

1 ½ cups white sugar
1 cup butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
5 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese
2 tablespoons evaporated milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
⅛ teaspoon salt
4 cups confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • Cream together 1 1/2 cups white sugar, butter or margarine, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and eggs. Add sour cream.
  • Mix together 5 cups flour, 1/2 teaspoon salt, baking powder and baking soda. Gradually add to the egg-sugar mixture.
  • Cover and chill dough for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).
  • Roll out on lightly floured surface to 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies. Bake on lightly greased cookie sheet for 10 - 12 minutes.
  • To Make Frosting: In small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat together the softened cream cheese and evaporated milk until smooth. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/8 teaspoon salt and confectioners' sugar. Beat until well blended. Color as desired and frost cooled cookies.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
6 tablespoons butter, softened
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup sour cream
1 teaspoon lemon extract
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease two cookie sheets.
  • In small bowl, combine flour, baking soda, and salt.
  • In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter until creamy. Gradually add sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in sour cream, lemon extract, and vanilla.
  • Reduce speed to low; beat in flour mixture just until blended.
  • Drop dough by rounded teaspoons, 1 inch apart, on prepared cookie sheets.
  • Bake until set and golden around edges, 10-12 minutes.
  • Cool 1 minute on cookie sheets; with wide spatula, transfer cookie to wire racks to cool completely.
