NEW YEAR’S IN SPANISH: LATINO TRADITIONS FOR GOOD LUCK
From spanishmama.com

- EATING 12 GRAPES AT MIDNIGHT. Many people eat 12 grapes as the clock strikes midnight, making a wish for each grape eaten. They must be eaten quickly (as the bell tolls, or in the first minutes of the new year), which is quite the task as Spanish grapes have large seeds.
- WEARING YELLOW UNDERWEAR. Believe it or not, this is a very strong superstition! The color yellow represents good luck in many Hispanic countries, so many people sport yellow underwear as the new year rings in.
- WALKING AROUND THE BLOCK WITH SUITCASES. For this one, people walk around the block or the house with a suitcase for traveling opportunities in the New Year.
- BURNING MUÑECOS. In Ecuador and other places, people set up effigies (muñecos) after Christmas, and burn them for año nuevo. In some places, the doll is a generic form meant to represent the old year and burned as a way to say good-bye to the past.
- EATING LENTILS. At least in Chile, some people eat lentils right as the new year comes in, to usher in prosperity. Others eat it as a midday meal, saying that the round lentils resemble coins.
12 “LUCKY” GRAPES: A CURIOUS SPANISH TRADITION ON NEW YEAR'S

- The 12 “lucky” grapes meaning and tradition. Although many countries have adopted this tradition, this custom began in Spain. Spaniards start the year by eating 12 grapes on December 31st at midnight, one grape for each clock’s chime.
- How Spaniards celebrate nowadays. As you probably know, the Spanish love food and “fiesta,” so that’s what you will have! The end of the year in Spain can be celebrated in two different ways, either at home surrounded by all your loved ones or in the city or town square where you are with a clock on it.
- How to eat the 12 grapes. Now it is time to show you how to eat them properly without choking in the attempt. Take your bowl with the 12 “uvas de la suerte” (12 lucky grapes), sit in front of the TV if you are at home, or look at the clock in front of you.
- Useful local tips. To get some practice with the grapes, a day before, on December 30th, there are several rehearsals in the “Puerta del Sol,” known as the “preuvas.”
- You may have asked yourself… What happens if I miss a few or eat them at the wrong time? If you are a bit clumsy and drop one or two grapes, don’t worry; you can laugh and make fun of the situation.

- Twelve Grapes. Eating 12 grapes at the stroke of midnight on the New Year is a very common tradition in most parts of the world. Millions of people observe this tradition very sincerely on the New Year as it is said to bring luck.
- Lottery. There is a lottery tradition followed by the people of Spain on Christmas rather than New Year which is pretty popular. As we all know Christmas and New Year go hand in hand and so observing the lottery tradition irrespective of when it is observed, New Year or Christmas is very much the same.
- Lentil Soup. Lentil soup is consumed on the New Year’s day as a part of the tradition. The tradition of eating the soup is believed to bestow luck. Usually in most parts of the world black-eyed peas and ham are consumed to attract luck, but in Spain they eat lentils and chorizo sausage to attract luck.
- Red Underwear. If you want to be struck by the love wearing red underwear is the right way to do it. If you got red underwear at hand you are lucky enough this year according to Spanish people.
- Cava. If you want to have great fortune in the coming year this tradition is just for you. Drinking Cava is yet another New Year’s Eve Traditions in Spain.
13 DELICIOUS FOODS MY SPANISH FAMILY EATS ON NEW YEAR
From sensationalspain.com

- Charcuterie & cheese board or “Tabla de quesos y embutidos” We all love a good cheese board. My family’s secret for preparing the best one is finding a local store with fresh cut cheese, preferible goat, cow or sheep.
- Roasted Veggies or “Verduras Rostizadas” If you think you don’t like veggies, you are WRONG. You just haven’t tried the good ones. It’s all about the seasoning.
- Pickled Mussels or “Mejillones en Escabeche” Avoiding bad luck on New Year’s? Absolutely yes. Pickled Mussels are an excellent choice because they’re known for bringing one of the foods that brings us good luck on New Year’s.
- Russian Potato Salad or “Ensaladilla Rusa” My mouth is already watering, I swear. Fun fact: In Spain we made our own modifications to the Russian Salad recipe over the years.
- Spanish Croquettes or “ Croquetas” Spain’s golden treasure. Croquetas can be perfectly paired with anything you wish. They could be filled with cheese, ham, beef, chicken, or fish.
