This recipe is best with plain, homestyle / Southern, or buttermilk biscuits. Don't use the flaky refrigerated biscuits for this fry biscuit dough recipe.

1 (16.3 ounce) can refrigerated plain biscuits (can of 8)-homestyle or Southern (NOT flaky)
3-4 cups vegetable oil
1/2 cup sugar (optional)
1 Tablespoon cinnamon (optional)

Steps:

  • Add oil to a deep saucepan, dutch oven or small pot. Heat to 375 °F.
  • If coating with cinnamon and sugar (optional), mix together cinnamon sugar in a small bowl. Set aside.
  • Remove biscuits from container. Using kitchen scissors or a knife, cut each biscuit into 4 sections. For each section, roll into a ball and then slightly flatten to a disc shape.
  • Drop each biscuit "disc" into the hot oil. Do not overlap. Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until light golden brown.
  • Using a slotted spoon, remove fried biscuits from oil and transfer to a paper towel lined plate to drain. If using cinnamon and sugar, transfer fried biscuits to bowl of cinnamon sugar. Flip once to cover biscuits on both sides with sugar mixture. Cool slightly before serving.
  • Serve plain or with apple butter, cinnamon butter, honey, honey butter or melted chocolate.

Souther Fried biscuits and apple butter are a great compliment to fried chicken, mashed potatos etc.

Number Of Ingredients 8

4 cups milk
1/2 cup water
4 tablespoons sugar
2 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast (2 2/3 packages)
1/2 cup shortening
6 teaspoons salt
7 -9 cups flour
apple butter

Steps:

  • Dissolve yeast in warm water.
  • Add and combine sugar, shortening and salt.
  • Add flour until mixture has a good dough consistency.
  • Knead for 5 minutes and let rise until about 1 1/2 times.
  • (45 min) don't let it rise to high.
  • Roll out and cut into biscuits.
  • (Alternatively, you can form into biscuits prior to rising and Freeze individually. Don't allow them to rise to high when defrosting) Heat oil in deep fryer to about 355 degrees but no hotter or biscuits will come out with a soggy center.
  • (note use fresh oil as biscuits will take on flavor of other foods that may have been cooked in the oil otherwise) Drop biscuits in oil and fry for 8 to 10 minutes.
  • They should be medium brown and done through.
  • Do not crowd too many biscuits in the oil at one time.

  • Place 3 quarts unsweetened tea in a large stock pot. Set pot on stove over high heat. As soon as tea starts to boil, remove from heat and set aside. While the tea is still hot, add sugar and salt and stir with a whisk until completely dissolved.
  • While chicken brines, make biscuits. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Prepare a half- size sheet pan with butter.
  • Add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and whisk for 2 minutes. Mix with hands for 3 minuntes until fully incorporated. Set aside.
