FANTASTIC PHILLY HOAGIE DIP

Growing up in a suburb outside Philadelphia, you have hoagies..and really great hoagies! Here in Maryland they have subs...they are NOT hoagies! This dip is the closest thing to a real hoagie taste, as long as you serve it with good bread. If you order a hoagie in the philly area you have it with Mayo, oil or oil and vinegar...sometimes all 3 together which tastes great but is a mess to eat on a roll. This dip combines all 3, but you can just use mayo. It's also best after its been chilled for 1-2 hrs or even longer so the flavors really blend. I have seen recipes with tomatoes and lettuce mixed in but it breaks down the dip and it won't keep. So I like to serve it with diced tomatoes, thinly shredded lettuce and hot peppers on the side for people to top as they like. It's great for parties, holidays, sports events, everyone loves it! Purchase your meats and cheeses at your deli counter regular slice (medium). Cook time listed is chill time.

1/4lb Ham, imported or virginia baked
1/4lb Hard Salami
1/4lb Cappicola (hot ham)
1/4lb White American cheese
1/4lb Provolone
1/2 Lg onion fine dice
3/4 cup mayonaisse -more if too dry
1-2 tbsp good olive oil
1-2 tsp red wine vinegar (more or less to taste)
1-2 tbsp dried oregano - taste test - we like alot
salt and pepper
To Serve:
have ready on the side
Diced tomato
finely shredded lettuce
hot pepper, chopped
8-10 good hard crust hoagie rolls like Amoroso rolls sliced into pieces

Steps:

  • Dice all the meats and cheeses. Keep them in a stack and just diced them up and sprinkle them through your fingers into a lg bowl to break them up. Then add mayo, oil and vinegar, onion, oregano, salt and pepper. Stir well until completely combined, adding more mayo if needed. Cover and chill for minimum of 1-2 hrs for flavors to develope. Serve with sliced hoagie rolls and the other topping on the side.

1/4 Pound Genoa salami Or regular salami
1/4 Pound Cappicola ham Or pepper ham
1/4 Pound Imported ham
1/4 Pound Provolone cheese
1/4 Pound American cheese
1 teaspoon Dried oregano
1 teaspoon Dried basil
1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder
3 tablespoons Mayonnaise
1 tablespoon Red wine vinegar
1 small Onion Chopped fine
1 Medium Tomato Chopped
1/2 Head Lettuce Shredded

Steps:

  • Slice all meats and cheeses into 1/2" pieces. It's easiest to stack it all together and slice. Separate pieces as necessary. Add oregano, basil, garlic powder, onion and mayonnaise. Mix thoroughly. Add red wine vinegar and mix again. At this point place the dip in the fridge for 1-2 hours if possible. Before serving add chopped tomato and lettuce. Cut rolls into bite sized pieces for scooping.

Here is my favorite Hoagie sandwich in dip form! I was so surprised to find this recipe on the Net. I wonder why I didn't think of this? I served this at a barbecue the other day and everyone raved about it. It's not a 'pretty' dip that's for sure.. but it is very good. Serve in a bowl surrounded by slices of Italian bread. Cook time is time to chill.

1/3 lb hot ham capicola, thinly sliced (luncheon meat)
1/3 lb domestic ham, thinly sliced (luncheon meat)
1/3 lb genoa salami, thinly sliced (luncheon meat)
1/3 lb American cheese (or provolone cheese, thinly sliced)
1 small onion, chopped
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1 cup mayonnaise
2 tomatoes (seeded and chopped)
1/2 head iceberg lettuce, finely shredded
pickled hot peppers or 1 jalapeno, chopped (optional)

Steps:

  • Layer all the cheese and meat on cutting surface and cut into long thin slices and then cut across to obtain small squares of meat and cheese.
  • Put in bowl and add onion, oregano and mayonnaise and peppers if using hot peppers.
  • Cover and chill until ready to serve.
  • When ready to serve add tomatoes and shredded lettuce,mixing well.
  • Serve with slices of bread rounds or crackers.

1/2 pound cooked ham, thinly sliced
1/2 pound Genoa salami, thinly sliced
1 pound American cheese, sliced
2 cups mayonnaise
About a tablespoon of red wine vinegar - more or less to taste
2 teaspoons dried oregano
1 onion, chopped
1/2 head iceberg lettuce, shredded
2 tomatoes, diced
12 hoagie rolls, torn into pieces for dipping

Steps:

  • Tear the ham, salami and American cheese into small pieces. Place in a large bowl In a medium bowl, blend the mayonnaise and oregano. Mix the mayonnaise mixture into the ham mixture 1/2 cup at a time, until meats and cheese are well coated. Mix in the onion Before serving, mix in the lettuce and tomatoes. Sprinkle the red wine vinegar over everything and mix it in well. Serve with the hoagie roll pieces for dipping The dip can be served in a bread bowl for a more attractive presentation, but keep in mind - this is NOT a pretty dip!! It's a hearty, dig in and enjoy kind of dip! As an alternative to tearing the hoagie rolls, you can slice them - or Italian bread - and use the dip as more of a spread. And if your family prefers, you can change the lunch meats and cheeses to suit your needs. Provolone cheese is really good in the dip, and for a bit of spice, use only half of the suggested amount of salami and substitute the other half with capicola. If your family is a fan of spicy stuff, you can also use the jarred hoagie spread, or add your own roasted red peppers to the dip. If you are not a fan of mayonnaise, you can also make the dip by eliminating the mayo entirely and use just vinegar and oil - the same as you would find in an Italian hoagie. Here's an important tip regarding this dip - the recipe makes a very generous portion. If you think you may have some left over after your party, only add the lettuce and tomato to the part you are going to serve. The tomato and lettuce get soggy and wilty way too quickly, and the next day, your dip will look runny and no one will want to eat it. Add lettuce and tomato only to the part you are serving.

1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced
1 large green pepper, thinly sliced

1-1/2 cups water
1/2 cup concentrated au jus sauce
1 pound thinly sliced deli roast beef
3 tablespoons horseradish sauce
7 slices mozzarella cheese

Steps:

  • Cut bread in half. Carefully hollow out bottom and top of loaf, leaving a 3/4-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). , In a large skillet, saute onion and green pepper in oil for 5 minutes or until tender. Meanwhile, in a small saucepan, combine water and au jus sauce; bring to a boil. Add beef. Reduce heat to medium; cook for 3 minutes or until meat is heated through. Remove beef with a slotted spoon; reserving 1/4 cup au jus., Spoon the onion and green pepper onto the bread bottom. Top with beef; drizzle with reserved au jus. Spread with horseradish sauce and top with cheese., Transfer to a baking sheet. Broil 3-4 in. from the heat for 1-2 minutes or until cheese is melted. Replace bread top. Cut into six wedges with a serrated knife.
