HOT SPICED SANGRIA

2 (750 milliliter) bottles Rioja (Spanish red wine)
1 cup brandy
1 bag frozen cherries
1 bag frozen peaches
1 orange, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 cup simple syrup, recipe follows
Orange peel, for garnish
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
1 orange, zested

Steps:

  • Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Put setting on HIGH for 1 hour. Reduce to warm to hold temperature. Ladle into glasses from slow cooker. Be sure to include some fruit in the glasses. Garnish with orange peel.
  • Combine the sugar, water and zest in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer. Stirring occasionally, simmer for 5 minutes or until sugar is dissolved.

Grated peel and juice of 1 orange
1 vanilla bean, scraped and split
3 or 4 cloves
3 cinnamon sticks
1/2 cup sugar
Whole cranberries, cinnamon sticks, orange and apple slices for garnishes

Steps:

  • In slow cooker, mix all ingredients except garnishes.
  • Cover; cook on High heat setting 2 to 4 hours.
  • Serve warm with garnishes.

Steps:

  • Combine 2 bottles each red wine and white wine, 1 cup brandy, 1 sliced orange, 2 cups each frozen cherries and frozen peaches, 2 cinnamon sticks and 1 cup simple syrup in a large slow cooker. (To make simple syrup, simmer 1 cup each sugar and water, stirring until dissolved.) Cover and cook on high for 1 hour, then keep warm on low until ready to serve. Ladle into glasses.
  • If you don't have a slow cooker, keep these drinks warm in a saucepan on the stovetop over low heat.

1 (2-inch) cinnamon stick
2 small apples, peeled, sliced
1/3 cup sweetened dried cranberries
1/2 cup golden raisins
1/2 cup halved dried apricots
1 (8-oz.) can pineapple tidbits in unsweetened juice, undrained
1/4 cup sugar
3/4 cup orange juice
1 (21-oz.) can peach pie filling

Steps:

  • Place cinnamon stick in 1 1/2 to 2 1/2-quart slow cooker. Layer with apples, cranberries, raisins, apricots and pineapple with liquid. Sprinkle with sugar. Pour orange juice over top.
  • Cover; cook on Low setting for 5 to 6 hours.
  • Just before serving, gently stir mixture. Remove and discard cinnamon stick. Gently stir in pie filling, cutting peach slices into smaller pieces as necessary. Serve in small dessert dishes or if desired, serve warm over pound cake or ice cream.

Boil for 3-4 minutes or until cranberries start to burst and the mixture is a deep red color. Strain into a bowl with a fine mesh strainer and set aside to cool. Discard the cranberries and cinnamon sticks.
  • Make the sangria. In a large pitcher, combine the rosé, apple cider, cranberry juice, Grand Marnier, cooled cranberry cinnamon simple syrup, fresh cranberries, apple slices, orange slices, and cinnamon sticks. Chill in the fridge for 2-4 hours or until ready to serve.
  • To make the sugared cranberries, bring water and ½ cup of the sugar to a boil. Once boiling, stir for thirty seconds until dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in the cranberries. Stir until completely coated, then transfer to a wire rack to dry. Let dry for an hour, then roll in the remaining sugar, working in batches. Transfer back to the rack, and let dry for an additional hour. Store in a cool, dry place.
  • Once ready to serve, pour sangria into glasses filled with crushed ice. Garnish with extra apple and orange slices, a handful of sugared cranberries, and a cinnamon stick!
