1 cup frozen small whole onions (from 1-pound bag), thawed
1/4 cup Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon peppered seasoned salt
1/4 teaspoon caraway seed
1 3/4 cups Progresso™ beef flavored broth (from 32-ounce carton)
1 1/2 cups frozen sweet peas (from 1-pound bag), thawed
1/2 cup sour cream

Steps:

  • Spray 3- to 4-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. Toss beef, potatoes, onions, flour, paprika, peppered seasoned salt and caraway seed in cooker until well mixed. Stir in broth.
  • Cover and cook on Low heat setting 7 to 8 hours.
  • Stir in peas and sour cream. Cover and cook on Low heat setting about 15 minutes or until peas are tender.

2 lb beef stew meat, cut into 1-inch pieces
1 large onion, sliced
1 3/4 cups Progresso™ beef-flavored broth (from 32-oz carton)
1 can (6 oz) Muir Glen™ organic tomato paste
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon paprika
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon caraway seed, if desired
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup cold water
3 tablespoons Gold Medal™ all-purpose flour
1 medium green bell pepper, cut into strips
8 cups hot cooked noodles

Steps:

  • In 10-inch skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Cook beef in oil about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain.
  • Spray 3 1/2- to 6-quart slow cooker with cooking spray. In slow cooker, place beef and onion. In medium bowl, mix broth, tomato paste, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, salt, caraway seed and pepper; stir into beef mixture.
  • Cover; cook on Low heat setting 8 to 10 hours (or High heat setting 4 to 5 hours) or until beef is tender.
  • In small bowl, stir water and flour until well mixed; gradually stir into beef mixture. Stir in bell pepper. Increase heat setting to High. Cover; cook 30 minutes longer. Serve goulash over noodles.

2 cups fresh baby carrots
1 medium onion, sliced
1 medium green bell pepper, sliced
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3 teaspoons paprika
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon dried thyme leaves
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/2 cup chili sauce
1 3/4 cups Progresso™ beef flavored broth (from 32-oz. carton)
2 cups sliced fresh mushrooms
1 (16-oz.) pkg. (10 cups) uncooked wide egg noodles
1 (8-oz.) container sour cream
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Steps:

  • In 3 1/2 to 4-quart slow cooker, combine beef, carrots, onion and bell pepper. Add flour, paprika, salt, thyme and pepper; toss beef and vegetables to coat. Add chili sauce and broth; mix well.
  • Cover; cook on low setting for 7 to 8 hours or until beef is tender.
  • Add mushrooms; mix well. Cover; cook an additional 20 to 30 minutes or until mushrooms are tender.
  • Meanwhile, cook noodles to desired doneness as directed on package. Drain.
  • Stir sour cream into stew until well mixed. To serve, spoon noodles into shallow bowls. Top with stew; sprinkle with parsley.

8 slices bacon, chopped
2 large onions, thinly sliced, about 1 1/2 cups
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
2 pounds beef shank or chuck, cut into stew meat
Salt and pepper
3 tablespoons hot Hungarian paprika
1 teaspoon ground marjoram
1 teaspoon lemon zest
1/4 cup white wine vinegar
1/2 cup white wine
1 cup tomato puree
2 cups beef broth
1 cup diced potatoes

Steps:

  • In the bottom of a heavy casserole saute the chopped bacon to render the fat. Add the onion to the bacon fat and brown until golden. Stir in the garlic but do not burn. Quickly add the beef in one layer, season with salt and pepper and brown all sides well.
  • Sprinkle the paprika, marjoram and lemon zest in and quickly stir to coat the meat evenly.
  • Add vinegar and wine and cook until nearly dry.
  • Add the tomato and broth, bring to a boil quickly before lowering the heat to a simmer and cook gently for 45 minutes. Add the potatoes. Continue to cook for an additional 20 minutes before serving with buttered noodles.

2 medium onions, chopped

1 garlic clove, minced
2 medium green peppers, cut into 1-inch pieces

I serve this over hot buttered pappardelle (egg noodles). This is also good without the sour cream/flour mixture. Adapted from Not Your Mother's Slow Cooker Cookbook.

3 tablespoons olive oil
1 1/4 lbs lean stewing beef, cut in 1 . 5-inch chunks and patted dry
2 medium red onions, chopped
1 large green bell pepper, cut in half & then in 1/2-inch strips
8 ounces button mushrooms, sliced
1 1/2 teaspoons paprika, high quality
4 cups beef broth
1/8 teaspoon marjoram, dried
1/4 teaspoon caraway seed, crushed with a mortar & pestle
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
2 garlic cloves, peeled & stuck on toothpicks
1 1/2 cups low-fat sour cream
1/4 cup flour
salt, to taste

Steps:

  • In a very large skillet, heat 1.5 tbsp oil.
  • When very hot, add the beef and brown on all sides, 3-4 minutes total.
  • Put the meat in the slow cooker.
  • Add the remaining oil (1.5 tbsp), and when warmed add the onions and peppers.
  • Brown slightly, stirring occasionally (about 5 minutes).
  • Stir in the mushrooms, and continue to cook for another 2 minutes.
  • Stir in the paprika.
  • Add the broth and bring to a boil.
  • Scrape the sides & bottom of the pan to release any browned on bits.
  • Pour this mixture in the slow cooker.
  • Add the tomato paste, marjoram, and caraway seeds to the cooker.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Add the garlic and submerge.
  • Cover and cook on the low setting for 6-8 hours, I like to go closer to 8 hours to develop the flavors more.
  • Prior to serving, remove and discard the garlic.
  • Combine the flour and sour cream, then stir into the meat mixture.
  • Serve over buttered noodles.
