SLOPPY JOES

Sloppy Joes image

You don't want to miss this one. The recipe came with my electricity bill, probably some 39 years ago. I tried it and it was the best recipe for Sloppy Joes I have ever had. I've been making it ever since. Great taste and just the right amount of everything.

Time 8h20m

Yield 6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 1/2 lbs ground beef
1/2 cup chopped onion
1/2 green pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 cup catsup
1 garlic clove, minced
2 teaspoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
3/4 cup water
2 tablespoons vinegar
1 teaspoon dry mustard
6 hamburger buns

Steps:

  • Brown ground beef in a skillet along with the onion and green pepper.
  • When brown, add the rest of the ingredients, stirring well.
  • Put into a crock pot.
  • Cook on low for 3-5 hours.
  • Serve on hamburger buns.
  • (This may be made on top of the stove on a very low heat for several hours, making sure that it does not get dry, but the flavors mix the best in a crock pot).

THE BEST SLOPPY JOES

The Best Sloppy Joes image

This is weeknight comfort food at its finest. We created a homemade sauce that is tangy and flavorful but also quick and easy. We used both ketchup and canned tomato sauce for lots of tomato-y zip and just a touch of brown sugar for a bit of sweetness and slight caramel finish. Green bell pepper is a key addition; it really enhances the other ingredients, elevating the flavor profile into the realm of a true sloppy joe.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     main-dish

Time 30m

Yield 4 to 6 sandwiches

Number Of Ingredients 15

2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 medium onion, diced
1 green bell pepper, diced
1 clove garlic, minced
1 pound lean ground beef
12 ounces (1 1/3 cup) tomato sauce
3/4 cup ketchup
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
1 teaspoon paprika
Pinch of cayenne pepper
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
6 hamburger buns, toasted

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onions and peppers and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and starting to caramelize in some spots, 6 to 7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute. Stir in the beef and cook, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula, until it is browned, no longer pink in the middle and cooked through, 7 to 8 minutes.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, red wine vinegar, paprika, cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon salt and a generous amount of black pepper and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened and heated through, 5 to 6 minutes. Spoon the meat onto the toasted buns.

SHERRI'S SLOPPY JOES

Sherri's Sloppy Joes image

This is my Grandmother's recipe-and it reminds me of her-sweet and tangy! A fast and easy meal and it freezes well. I have never eaten another sloppy joe other than this one so I cannot compare to mixes or cans-all I know is that my family and I love these. I don't usually measure the spices so use to your own taste. Regarding the vinegar, everyone in my family likes it really tangy so I use 4 Tablespoons but my Dad prefers less so adjust to your own liking. Hope you enjoy as much as I do!

SLOPPY JOE SHIRRED EGGS WITH SPINACH

Sloppy Joe Shirred Eggs With Spinach image

Swap out the sugar in standard sloppy joes for the carrots and caramelized onions in this turkey version, then nestle in eggs on mounds of garlicky spinach.

Categories     The Way We're Cooking Now     Dinner     turkey     Quick & Easy     Onion     Carrot     Tomato     Egg     Spinach     Dairy Free     Soy Free     Peanut Free     Wheat/Gluten-Free     Tree Nut Free

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 13

1 medium carrot, top removed and cut into about 6 pieces
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, or 2 scant cups roughly chopped fresh tomatoes
2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided
3 garlic cloves, minced
8 ounces fresh spinach (4 cups packed)
3 teaspoons kosher salt, divided
1 pound ground turkey
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
½ cup R-Rated Onions
2 tablespoons red wine vinegar
4 large eggs Parmigiano Reggiano, for serving (optional)

Steps:

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F. Combine the carrot, tomatoes plus their juice, and 1 cup water in a blender. Blitz till it's as smooth as your blender allows.
  • In an ovenproof 12-inch sauté pan or skillet set over medium heat, cook 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and the minced garlic. Watch for the garlic to start sizzling, then stir in the spinach and ½ teaspoon of the salt. Continue stirring for a minute, until all the spinach is wilted. Remove it from the pan and set aside.
  • Add the final tablespoon olive oil to the pan, raise the heat to medium, and add the turkey plus 1 teaspoon salt. Using a wooden spoon or spatula, break the turkey up into small morsels as it browns. When you have browned turkey, add the cumin, paprika, and black pepper. Stir to incorporate, toasting the spices for about 30 seconds.
  • Add the carrot-tomato mixture, the R-Rated Onions, vinegar, and ½ teaspoon salt. Let this cook for about 15 minutes, uncovered, stirring occasionally. You may need to lower the heat to prevent Joe from sticking or splattering. When the ragout is done it will be thick and juicy. If it seems too dry, stir in a little water. Taste the ragout for seasoning and adjust as you like.
  • Turn the heat off and make four indentions in the ragout. Divide the spinach and put equal amounts in each indentation. Top each section of spinach with a cracked egg. Sprinkle the eggs with the remaining 1 teaspoon salt.
  • Slide the skillet onto the middle rack of your preheated oven. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the whites are set and the yolks are slightly runny.
  • To serve, scatter ribbons of Parmigiano Reggiano or another hard cheese over the top. If bread is your thing, this is great with toast.
