SAUCY FRANKS

Saucy Franks image

I got this recipe off just a pinch by cook Cassie. She said it was a recipe made in the past by school lunch ladies. It was surprisingly good. Had to leave the onions out for the grandkids but they loved them. Kind of a variation of a chili dog. I add melted velveeta on top so yummmmmmy

SAUCY FRANKS

Saucy Franks image

A delicious way to dress up some plain hot dogs. Spiral-sliced hot dogs are simmered in a sweet and sour tomato sauce and served on buns.

Time 15m

Yield 8

Number Of Ingredients 11

8 hot dogs
4 tablespoons butter
2 cans (10 ounce size) tomato soup, undiluted
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup water
6 tablespoons vinegar
2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons lemon juice
2 small onions, thinly sliced
1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper
8 hot dog buns

Steps:

  • Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. Slice the hot dogs in a spiral-style, taking care not to slice all the way through the hot dogs. Place the hot dogs in the skillet and cook, turning as needed, until browned on all sides. Add the tomato soup, brown sugar, water, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, sliced onions, and bell pepper to the skillet. Cover the skillet and let the mixture simmer for 5 minutes or until the vegetables are crisp-tender and the hot dogs are heated through. Carefully remove the hot dogs from the sauce and place on the buns. Top each with some of the sauce and serve immediately.

Another great recipe I dug out of a family cookbook... This is a great twist on hot dogs and was always a staple at my and my sister's birthday parties... Our friends would always say, "Saucy Dogs? Ewww! What's that?!" Then we couldn't get them to stop eating them!!! Definately a kid pleaser!!! Enjoy!!!

SAUCY SATELLITE FRANKS CIRCA 1965

Saucy Satellite Franks Circa 1965 image

This is one of the first things we cooked in middle school Home Economics. It was originally on recipe card that was given out by Baltimore, Gas, & Electric. (BGE). We used the older Corning ware dishes that included the electric corded hot plate. All these years I have been looking for this recipe. I finally found it in some old cookbooks my mother had. It's certainly not the most amazing recipe, but I loved it and I remember enjoying making it in class. Great for kids, one pot meal as well.
