CROCK POT KIELBASA GARBANZO STEW

Crock Pot Kielbasa Garbanzo Stew image

This is a very simple and great recipe that my family has been making for years and I don't see anything like it on this site. It's from a 1976 edition of a Better Homes and Gardens Crockery Cooker cookbook, listed as Sausage-Garbanzo bake. I usually double the recipe and serve with white rice. You can reduce the fat content by choosing low-fat or Turkey-kielbasa.

Provided by Oliver1010

A traditional Polish stew using pork, kielbasa, and sauerkraut. Great for a cold winters day. Well worth the time it takes to make it!

Provided by MJ46NY

Categories     Soups, Stews and Chili Recipes     Stews     Pork

Time 3h45m

Yield 10

Number Of Ingredients 25

2 thick slices hickory-smoked bacon
1 pound kielbasa sausage, sliced into 1/2 inch pieces
1 pound cubed pork stew meat
¼ cup all-purpose flour
3 cloves garlic, chopped
1 onion, diced
2 carrots, diced
1 ½ cups sliced fresh mushrooms
4 cups shredded green cabbage
1 (16 ounce) jar sauerkraut, rinsed and well drained
¼ cup dry red wine
1 bay leaf
1 teaspoon dried basil
1 teaspoon dried marjoram
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
¼ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
⅛ teaspoon caraway seed, crushed
1 pinch cayenne pepper
½ ounce dried mushrooms
1 dash bottled hot pepper sauce
1 dash Worcestershire sauce
5 cups beef stock
2 tablespoons canned tomato paste
1 cup canned diced tomatoes

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Heat a large pot over medium heat. Add the bacon and kielbasa; cook and stir until the bacon has rendered its fat and sausage is lightly browned. Use a slotted spoon to remove the meat and transfer to a large casserole or Dutch oven.
  • Coat the cubes of pork lightly with flour and fry them in the bacon drippings over medium-high heat until golden brown. Use a slotted spoon to transfer the pork to the casserole. Add the garlic, onion, carrots, fresh mushrooms, cabbage and sauerkraut. Reduce heat to medium; cook and stir until the carrots are soft, about 10 minutes. Do not let the vegetables brown.
  • Deglaze the pan by pouring in the red wine and stirring to loosen all of the bits of food and flour that are stuck to the bottom. Season with the bay leaf, basil, marjoram, paprika, salt, pepper, caraway seeds and cayenne pepper; cook for 1 minute.
  • Mix in the dried mushrooms, hot pepper sauce, Worcestershire sauce, beef stock, tomato paste and tomatoes. Heat through just until boiling. Pour the vegetables and all of the liquid into the casserole dish with the meat. Cover with a lid.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for 2 1/2 to 3 hours, until meat is very tender.

POLISH CROCKPOT STEW WITH KIELBASA AND CABBAGE

Polish Crockpot Stew with Kielbasa and Cabbage image

We got this recipe from our good buddy (and Bobby's neighbor) Michael Peay. He remembers his mom always used to make more than he and his brothers ever could eat because their house was so popular with their friends, especially around dinnertime. This stew, full of good porky sausage and plenty of tender cabbage, was his favorite childhood meal.

Yield serves 4 to 6

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 tablespoon olive oil
One 1-pound package kielbasa, sliced into 1/2-inch-thick rounds
1 medium onion, halved and thinly sliced
1 3/4 pounds white potatoes, peeled and cubed
1 small cabbage, quartered, cored, and sliced into ribbons
1 tablespoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Steps:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the kielbasa for about 5 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the meat to the crock-pot.
  • Reduce the heat in the skillet to medium and add the onion. Cook, stirring, for 3 to 5 minutes, or until softened. Add 1/2 cup of water and continue cooking, scraping up the brown bits, for 1 minute more. Add the onion with the liquid to the crockpot. Stir the potatoes, cabbage, salt, and pepper into the crockpot.
  • Cover and cook on high for 1 1/2 hours or on low for 3 hours. Serve hot.

KIELBASA AND CABBAGE STEW

Kielbasa and Cabbage Stew image

This is a recipe passed down from my husband's mom. I have no idea where she got it from, but I am glad I got it from her. It is a quick and easy stew. If you like cabbage and kielbasa, you will like this. What a great winter dish.. enjoy!

Provided by sandale99

Categories     Clear Soup

Time 1h5m

Yield 4-6 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 lb kielbasa
1 large head of cabbage
1 large onion
3 -4 russet potatoes (peeled)
water
garlic (to taste)
salt and pepper (to taste)
vinegar (to add on as wanted per serving)

Steps:

  • Cut the cabbage in about 8 slices and then in chunks. Place this in a pot with enough water to cover. Add onion that has been cut into chunks. Cover and bring to a boil.
  • When the cabbage is almost done, add sliced raw potatoes (about 1/2" thick) and sliced Kielbasa.(sliced thin(about 1/4") if you want meat in every bite, or thick if you want to bite into chunks (about 3/4").
  • Also add your spices. There should be just enough water to barely cover the stew.
  • Cover and cook at a simmer till potatoes are done.(about 15 minutes).
  • I serve this in a soup bowl, and add a bit of vinegar to your liking, just before eating. If you don't care for vinegar, adding a bit of chicken stock and less water while cooking will flavor this dish also.
  • It is a real warm you up meal on a cold winter day. I keep this meal simple. I serve with it with biscuits and butter, or a loaf of garlic bread.

MOM'S POLISH STEWED CABBAGE

My mother often served a delicious Polish dish made with cabbage. We always topped ours with a dollop of sour cream and sometimes served this over mashed potatoes. You can make this just using the cabbage, but I add kielbasa or smoked turkey for additional flavour. Delicious.
