TAVERN BAR STYLE PICKLED EGGS RECIPE

Tavern Bar Style Pickled Eggs Recipe image

Tavern Bar Style Pickled Eggs are a popular bar food served for hundreds of years to hungry patrons. These spicy eggs get their bright cheery yellow color from chili peppers, turmeric, and pickling spice. This fun easy pickled egg recipe can be a healthy snack, appetizer, or cold hor d'oeuvre.

Provided by Lisa Hatfield

Categories     Appetizers, Dips, & Snacks

Time 35m

Number Of Ingredients 8

12 boiled eggs (cage free/organic)
1 jar 12 ounces yellow chili peppers (and their liquid) (Mezzetta brand is what I used)
4 cups water
4 cups distilled white vinegar
2 tablespoons pickling spice
1 teaspoon turmeric (optional) (gives a pretty yellow color)
2 teaspoons sea salt
1 tablespoon granulated white sugar

Steps:

  • BOIL METHOD 1: Place eggs in a large deep pan, cover with enough water. people add a splash of vinegar or dash of baking soda to the water and say it helps them peel! Bring to a full boil, then turn off the heat. Put a lid on your pot, and let rest for at least 20 minutes.
  • STEAM METHOD 2: Make sure your veggie steamer basket fits in your large pot. Put a good 1 inch of water in a large pot and bring the cold water to a boil over high heat which takes about 6 minutes. Place the steamer basket in the pot and all 12 eggs on the steamer basket. Cover the pot, and set the timer for 12 minutes. Using a slotted spoon, move the hard boiled eggs to a bowl filled halfway with ice water. Note: This method is MUCH faster as you don't have to wait for a large pot of water to boil, and they are much easier to peel, try it out!
  • Peel all the shells off, and place eggs in a large clean jar. I use a clamp-style 2-quart large jar. Next, pour the 12 oz jar of Hot Yellow Peppers with their pickling mixture into your large glass jar on top.
  • In a large saucepan, add the white vinegar, water, pickling spice, sugar, turmeric, and sea salt. Heat the pickling solution to just boiling, and then turn off the heat to stop the cooking process.
  • Carefully pour the hot brine solution over the hard-boiled eggs and chili peppers. Wait for the jar contents of peeled eggs, yellow peppers with their juice, and vinegar brine liquid to cool, with the jar open for about one hour. Then place the closed jar in the refrigerator.
  • Wait about 7 days, and they are ready to eat!
  • Always keep these pickled eggs cold in the refrigerator, eat within one month.

Pickled Eggs image

Here's a great recipe for leftover Easter eggs or any eggs you happen to have in your fridge. The combination of coriander seeds, yellow mustard seeds and fresh dill makes for a delicious bite.

Provided by Food Network Kitchen

Categories     side-dish

Time P1DT3h20m

Yield 12 pickled eggs

Number Of Ingredients 10

2 1/4 cups distilled white vinegar
Kosher salt
1 tablespoon coriander seeds
1 tablespoon yellow mustard seeds
1 tablespoon sugar
1/2 small yellow or white onion, halved and thinly sliced
1/2 to 1 Fresno or other hot red chile, thinly sliced
12 hard-boiled eggs, peeled
Tips from 9 inner celery ribs
6 sprigs dill

Steps:

  • Bring the vinegar, 3/4 cup water, 3 tablespoons salt, the coriander seeds, mustard seeds, sugar, onions and chiles to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring to dissolve the salt and sugar. Reduce the heat, cover and let the brine simmer for 5 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, pierce each egg all the way through about 6 times with a cake tester or toothpick. Put 2 eggs in each of 3 glass pint jars with lids, and tuck the celery and dill in around them. Spicy Egg Sandwich with Sausage and Pickled Peppers image

A sausage patty topped with feta, cilantro, sweet, piquant pickled peppers, and a sunny-side-up egg make for a hearty sandwich that's perfect for brunch, lunch, or dinner. You can find Peppadew peppers at olive bars at most large supermarkets, or check the condiment aisle, where they're sold jarred.

PICKLED DEVILED EGGS

Pickled Deviled Eggs image

Before they are deviled, these hard-cooked eggs are pickled in rice vinegar, brown sugar and garlic, along with slivered red onions. The pickling brine dyes the egg whites deep pink, and the onions turn pungently sweet and sour, making a terrific garnish for the deviled eggs. And after the eggs are gone, you'll still be left with plenty of pickled onions that will last for weeks in the refrigerator. Add them to salads, tacos, grilled meats and sandwiches. You won't be sorry to have them on hand.

TICKLED PINK PICKLED EGGS OR PRETTY IN PINK PICKLED EGGS

Tickled Pink Pickled Eggs or Pretty in Pink Pickled Eggs image

My mom made these all the time when I was a little girl and I loved them. These eggs are such a pretty color when they're done and although they look nice they're very spicy and bite you back when you bite into them! They're quite pretty sliced over a salad or as an appetizer on the buffet table or just eat the yummy things for no other reason than the fact that you want a cute, spicy, pickled egg! They get their gorgeous color from the beets which are delish too. The onion rings can be used to garnish a salad as well. Heck, use all the goodies from the jar; you just can't go wrong with this one.

Provided by Piper Lee

Categories     Vegetable

Time P5DT30m

Yield 24 pickled eggs plus beets and onions, 24 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 5

2 dozen hard-boiled eggs, shelled
2 (15 ounce) cans whole baby beets, undrained (use a good quality canned beet for the best color and can size is approximate.)
1 (8 ounce) jar hot chili peppers (these are small hot yellow peppers and jar size is approximate)
1 large onion, sliced into rings
apple cider vinegar

Steps:

  • In a gallon jar dump in the yellow chili peppers, juice and all.
  • Then dump in the undrained beets over the peppers.
  • Place the sliced onion rings on top of the beets.
  • Then place the shelled, whole eggs in on top of the onion rings.
  • Pour vinegar over everything to cover, making sure that all the ingredients are immersed in the vinegar, beet juice & chili juice.
  • Put the lid on the jar or cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 5 to 7 days.
  • As I said, these are just gorgeous sliced and the beets and onions are yummy too. I don't eat the peppers because they're just too hot for me, but the brave may want to munch on them as well.
  • Enjoy!
