TOM COLLINS COCKTAIL

Tom Collins Cocktail image

This Tom Collins recipe is the best! Tom Collins cocktails are made with gin, lemon, club soda and simple syrup. They're delightfully fizzy, delicious and refreshing. Recipe yields 1 cocktail, so multiply as needed (you can mix several at once in a cocktail shaker).

Categories     Cocktail

Time 10m

Number Of Ingredients 9

Ice
2 ounces gin*
1 ounce lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup, recipe below
Club soda or sparkling water (I like Topo Chico)
1 lemon round or 1/2 orange round, for garnish
1 Luxardo cherry or other cocktail cherry, for garnish
¼ cup sugar (traditional) or honey (my favorite)
¼ cup water

Steps:

  • To make the simple syrup: Combine the sugar (or honey) and water in a small saucepan. Warm over medium heat, whisking occasionally, just until the sweetener has fully dissolved into the water. Remove the pot from the heat and set it aside to cool.
  • To make a cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Pour in the gin, lemon juice and simple syrup. Shake for 20 to 30 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is really cold.
  • Fill a Collins (tall) glass with ice. Strain the contents of the shaker into the glass. Fill the rest of the glass with club soda, and give it a gentle stir with a spoon.
  • Garnish with a lemon round or 1/2 of an orange round, plus a cocktail cherry. Enjoy.

TOM COLLINS

Tom Collins image

The Tom Collins is perhaps the ultimate highball and one of history's most enduring cocktails. It was historically made with Old Tom gin, which is sweeter than London dry gin, but the drink works well with both types of the spirit. (Old Tom only recently became available again, thanks to the clamoring of mixologists.) A peculiar methodology is used in mixing up a Tom Collins. Though it contains fresh juice, which usually dictates that the drink must be shaken, it is nonetheless often built in the glass in which it is served. But shaking the drink and then straining it into an ice-filled highball works as well, and arguably leads to a better integrated cocktail.

TOM COLLINS

Master the art of the classic Tom Collins cocktail, plus three twists. Gin, lemon, sugar syrup and soda water are the ingredients for your cocktail cupboard

Provided by Alice Lascelles

Categories     Cocktails

Time 12m

Number Of Ingredients 4

50ml gin
25ml lemon juice
25ml sugar syrup
125ml chilled soda water

Steps:

  • Build the drink over plenty of ice in a Collins glass, stir gently and garnish with a slice of lemon. 3 TWISTSRaspberry CollinsRaspberries give this twist on the classic Collins a pretty splash of colour. Start by gently muddling a handful of raspberries in the bottom of an empty Collins glass, then add the ice, all the other ingredients and mix well with a long handled spoon. Garnish with an orange slice. Brandy CollinsThis is a really refreshing way to enjoy cognac. For best results, use a young-ish VS or VSOP cognac that's nice and fruity. Just make the drink as normal, substituting cognac for gin, then garnish with a slice of ginger or a ribbon of lemon peel. Elderflower CollinsElderflower and lemon is a winning combination. You can make it with elderflower cordial or liqueur for something a touch more boozy. Mix the drink as normal, but use the liqueur or cordial in place of the sugar syrup. Garnish with a lemon slice.
