7+ PERFECT PLANTS FOR AN EDIBLE FRONT PORCH GARDEN

- Herbs. I’m listing herbs as one category here, even though there are plenty to choose from. Almost all of them grow well in containers, they’re usually easy to grow, and they enhance darn near any other vegetable you cook with.
- Tomatoes. Cherry tomatoes are a winner for container gardening, but you don’t have to limit yourself here. Determinate, or bush-type, tomatoes grow to about three or four feet tall and will produce wonderfully delicious fruits.
- Lettuce. Leaf lettuce grows quickly and does very well in containers. You may never need to buy lettuce at the grocery store again.
- Peas. Peas grow quickly, and they’re so darn good straight from the pod. If you could grow candy in a garden, it would be peas. Not to mention, pea greens are seriously tasty.
- Radishes. Some varieties of radishes are ready to harvest within three weeks of planting, but even slower-growing varieties like the heirloom Salad Rose only take about five weeks from seed to harvest.

- Grow Gorgeous Veggies. Deep purple eggplantsand peppers, giant globe artichokes, frilly kaleand rainbow chardare just as beautiful as purely ornamental plants, but they also provide delicious organic food for your dinner table.
- Wrangle Sprawling Plants in a Container. Depending on the size of your front yard and the tolerance of your neighbors for the out-of-the-ordinary, you may want to avoid some of the more sprawling vegetable specimens.
- Let some Edibles Flower Without Harvesting. Artichokes and chives, with their purple blooms, immediately come to mind as having beautiful blossoms when left to flower.
- Attract Birds and Butterflies. Pollinatorslike birds, bees and butterflies will help your garden be more productive. And who doesn’t love to spot hummingbirds and butterflies?
- Swap Ornamental Foliage for Edibles. When you’re beginning to transition a traditional front garden to an edible landscape, you can replace purely ornamental foliage plants with lettuces, kale, Swiss chardor even rhubarb.

- Fan Flowers. Fan flowers, which look like tiny fans, are pretty, hardy annuals that bloom all summer long. They come in shades of purple, blue, white and pink and look great spilling out of containers.
- Strawberry Plant. Why not add perennial edibles to your patio garden? New ever-bearing strawberry varieties sport little berries that are almost too pretty to eat!
- Chrysanthemums. Replace faded annuals with these harbingers of fall in late summer. Mums come in a rainbow of shades, which pair well with autumn’s gourds and pumpkins for a fun seasonal display.
- Cuphea. If you want hummingbirds, plant these amazing annuals! Bright orange-y tubular flowers keep pollinators coming back all season long. These annuals need plenty of space to grow, so give them their own container.
- Begonias. Begonias come in a ton of deep, saturated shades including white, pink, orange, rose, or red. They bloom continuously without deadheading (pinching off spent flowers) until a hard frost.
