Despite the name, the Boston Cooler is a Detroit original. To be properly enjoyed, you must use Vernor's as your ginger ale. However, as it's not readily available in all markets, substitute other brands if you must.

- pour ginger ale in very large glass.
- add 1 large scoop of ice cream.
- It will foam quite a bit. You may add more ginger ale or ice cream, to suit you taste.

- Combine 6 ounces each bourbon and fresh orange juice in a large cocktail shaker. Add 5 to 6 tablespoons pure maple syrup and fill with ice. Cover and shake vigorously for 1 minute, then strain into 6 chilled champagne flutes. Top with your favorite dry sparkling white wine and garnish each drink with an orange peel twist.

Typically made with vanilla ice cream and ginger ale, this Boston Cooler gets an orangey update with orange sherbet and home-made ginger ale.

- Make ginger ale: Place ginger syrup in a large pitcher; stir in seltzer. Place 1 scoop vanilla ice cream in the bottom of each of four glasses. Top each with 2 scoops orange sherbet; pour ginger ale to fill glasses. Serve immediately

- In a blender blend berries, orange juice, 1/2 cup sugar, and lime juice until smooth. Force purée through a fine sieve into a large measuring cup or bowl, pressing hard on solids. Chill purée, covered, until cold and stir in additional sugar.(Purée keeps, covered and chilled, 2 days.)
- Fill tall glasses with ice and add enough berry purée to fill each glass by three quarters. Top off drinks with seltzer water or club soda and stir well.
