Great dessert for a party or family gathering (double the recipe in a 9x13-inch baking dish) or to make just for yourself on a chilly evening. Simply delicious.

APPLE CRISP WITH OAT TOPPING

Apple Crisp with Oat Topping image

This is the best dessert for the early fall when the sweet and firm apples are just in season. Use the best quality cinnamon you can get and get it from a spice merchant or even a store where you can get it bulk; it does make a difference. Within ten minutes of going in the oven the scent will fill the house and neighbors you loaned things to years ago will return them just to invite themselves in and wonder aloud if there is any left (Note: there isn't). Optional accompaniments would be caramel sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream.

HOW TO MAKE THE BEST APPLE CRISP RECIPE

How to Make The BEST Apple Crisp Recipe image

This easy apple crisp recipe with it's brown sugar and oatmeal crumble streusel will take you right back to the best days of childhood.

Provided by Heidi

Categories     Dessert

Time 1h30m

Number Of Ingredients 11

6 cups Granny Smith apples (green apples) (, peeled, cored, and cut into 1/4" slices (about 9-10 green apples))
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup melted butter

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the sliced apples with the sugar, 1 1/2 tablespoon flour, salt cinnamon, and nutmeg, and set aside for the sugar to soften the apples and macerate, creating a light syrup. In a smaller mixing bowl, toss the oats, 1 1/2 cups flour, brown sugar, and baking powder together, then use your fingers to mix in the melted butter, gently making small clumps where you can.
  • Layer the sugared apples and their juice in a 9 X 13 baking dish and sprinkle evenly with the oatmeal mixture, but don't pack it tightly. Bake uncovered for 50-60 minutes until the apples are soft and tender and the sauce has thickened and is bubbly. If the crisp seems to be browning too much, cover with foil for the remaining cooking time.
  • Let the apple crisp cool for 20-30 minutes before serving for the caramel sauce to thicken. Divide in bowls and top with vanilla ice cream or whip cream, and serve.

OATMEAL APPLE PEAR CRISP

Oatmeal Apple Pear Crisp image

I've been making this (or versions of it) since I was 12 years old. This is an evolved version of the "Quaker Oatmeal Apple Crisp". It is easy to make and to play with, try adding some chopped walnuts to the crisp or use a completely different fruit for the filling, such as peaches. It's great warmed up in the microwave but it's equally good straight out of the fridge. Wonderful comfort food for winter or exam time. Very easily converted into vegan by substituting margarine for butter.

1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt

HONEY OATMEAL APPLE CRISP

Honey Oatmeal Apple Crisp image

My husband and I decided to make a lifestyle change which included eliminating sugar, white flour, processed foods etc., from our diet. I created this delicious and simple recipe to satisfy an occasional sweet tooth, also this dessert is ideal to serve to children as it is only sweetened with honey. If using organic apples you may choose to leave the peels on, also depending on the sweetness of the apples you use you may choose to decrease the amount of honey. To make a virtually fat free version, you can also eliminate the butter in the topping, I have tried this both ways and find that it turns out almost the same. I hope you enjoy!

Easy, delicious, and a great way to use up all of those seasonal apples! Vegan, Gluten-Free versions of this apple crisp are included!

Provided by Mackenzie Laverick

Time 1h15m

Number Of Ingredients 10

Filling:
5 Large Apples
1 Tbsp cinnamon
2 Tsp vanilla
Optional: 1 tbsp lemon juice
Topping:
2/3 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup GF flour
1/3 cup DF butter
1/2 cup GF oats

Steps:

  • Prepare the filling by slicing five large apples into cubes. Place in a 9 inch pie pan and sprinkle with cinnamon, vanilla, and lemon juice. Stir to mix.
  • To make the filling, combine all the ingredients in a separate bowl and mix together until everything is crumbly but still holding together a bit. Sprinkle over the apples, try to cover the entire top. To make vegan, substitute butter with a dairy free version, I used an olive oil based butter. To make gluten-free, use gluten-free oats and flour. I used Trader Joe's' GF rolled oats and Bob's Red Mill GF baking flour.
