Adapted from Sherry: The Wine World's Best-Kept Secret (Ten Speed Press) by Talia Baiocchi I've been enjoying stirring and shaking up some of the cocktails in this book, which also tells the history of sherry, how its made, why it's so special, and explains the differences between the various types of sherry, from Fino to Moscatel. There are also some recipes for nibbles to go with sherry, to help you polish off the rest of the bottle : ) For this cocktail, Talia recommends an amontillado sherry, but any dry sherry would work fine.

Number Of Ingredients 6

One 1/2-inch (1cm) thick slice of fresh ginger (peeled)
1/2 ounce agave nectar
3/4 ounce fresh squeezed lime juice
2 ounces dry sherry
1 ounce best-quality mezcal (such as Del Maguey Vida)
One slice of lime and nutmeg (for garnish)

Steps:

  • Put the ginger, agave nectar, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker and muddle them together.
  • Add the sherry and mezcal and fill the shaker halfway with ice. Shake for 20 seconds.
  • Strain into an old-fashioned or on-the-rocks glass. Add a wheel of lime and grate a small dusting of nutmeg over the top.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1/2 inch piece of fresh ginger, peeled
1/2 ounce agave
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
3 ounces dry sherry
1 ounce Mezcal
slice of lime, for garnish
fresh nutmeg, for garnish

Steps:

  • Step 1 Fill a low ball grass halfway with ice and set aside.
  • Step 2 Using a cocktail shaker, add the ginger and agave. Using a muddler, muddle the mixture well.
  • Step 3 Add the lime juice, Sherry, Mezcal and a handful of ice. Shake vigorously for about 20 seconds.
  • Step 4 Strain the mixture into the prepared lowball. Garnish with a slice of lime and some freshly grated nutmeg.

Try this ginger, sherry, and mezcal cocktail, which is smoky, spicy, sweet, and sour, thanks to a squeeze of fresh lime. It's a riff on the popular Penicillin.

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 (½-inch-thick) slice fresh ginger, peeled
½ oz. agave nectar
¾ oz. lime juice
2 oz. amontillado sherry
1 oz. mezcal
Garnish: nutmeg, lime wheel

Steps:

  • Add ginger to a mixing glass with the agave and lime juice and muddle. Add sherry and mezcal, and fill with ice. Shake, and finely strain over a large cube of ice into a rocks glass. Grate nutmeg over the top and garnish with the lime wheel.
